After nearly a decade, 1997 saw the return of NASCAR to Southern California with the inaugural Auto Club 500, although it was then known as the California 500. Until 2010 the race's lenght was 500 miles but the 2011 event will be 400 miles or 200 laps competition. This year's race was also moved from February to March, the race had been raced in February since 2005.After being pleased with the results of the reduction of the track's former fall race date, the Pepsi Max 400, from 500 to 400 miles Auto Club Speedway decided to do the same thing to its spring race.
