"Sugar" Shane Mosley former lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight world champion (40-4, 1 NC, 35 KO's) Pomona, California. 34-years-old, 5'9", 150-pounds, trained by former middleweight world champion John David Jackson, self-managed.
Style: Mosley is a product of his father's "power boxing" mantra. Basically Mosley is boxer/puncher with the emphasis on punching. Mosley can still fire wicked combinations and land with authority but he is a very small junior middleweight. In the past, going up in weight Mosley placed a greater importance on punching with power; nevertheless he is a far more effective moving, boxing and throwing precise combos. Throughout much of his career his bread and butter has been based on his speed and reflexes.
Strength: Mosley has the ability to pull the trigger and hit the mark quickly. He is very adept at landing right hand counters off long left jabs, and that is one of the key reasons why he was able to defeat Oscar De La Hoya in both of their encounters. Mosley doesn't have one-punch knockout power but he can and will crack you with both hands. He throws two-three, and four-punch combos with precision and intensity. Adding to his arsenal, Mosley is a simply a brutal body puncher. Left hooks to the ribs and liver followed by sharp right hands under the heart are his stock and trade. If you can't keep Mosley off of you, he will eat your heart on the inside.
Weakness: Despite a world of talent and an excellent work ethic, Mosley continues to slow down. He still throws rapid-fire combinations but they lack the crackling power that was often evident a little earlier in his career. Wright was simply too big and too strong for Mosley at 154 and Shane is far better suited to keep fighting at 147, rather than to go up one more weight class. At age 34, one wonders how long Mosley will want to sacrifice his body to get into condition to continue to ply his trade at the top level.
Fernando "Ferocious" Vargas former IBF and WBA junior middleweight champion (24-2, 22 KO's) Oxnard, California. 5'10", 158 pounds, the 27-year-old Vargas' trainer of record is Danny Smith and is managed by Shelly Finkel.
Style: Vargas is a boxer/puncher who likes to bang. At times that has hurt rather than helped Vargas' career. What many people overlook is that he is an excellent boxer with fluid moves, nice balance and athleticism. He likes to double up on the left hook and is at his best when he cuts off the ring and can unload a searing left hook to the body followed by a short right cross on the button and then another hook upstairs.
Strength: Vargas throws wicked left hooks to the body and when he's in rhythm he will double up with his best shot. He has an underrated right cross and on occasion he will catch opponents flat-footed when he fires whistling lead right hands. On the inside, Vargas knows how to move, block and counter. In close quarters he's very dangerous with a right uppercut to the chin.
Weakness: Vargas has been plagued by bad back, which had hampered his training and ability to fight for the last two years. Vargas' simply doesn't have the best chin; Trinidad had him on the deck four times, Rivera once and De La Hoya also once. Factor in that Vargas has also been cut several times over the course of his career and that he is coming back after back problems; leaving one to wonder just how much he has left in the tank. The biggest question mark with Vargas is always his weight. He struggles to tip the Toledo's at 154. At the end of January in training camp he was sparring at around 165 but that was after he plummeted from around two bills.
