Daytona International Speedway is one of the most renowned and history laden tracks on the NASCAR circuit. The track opened in 1959, but races started on the spot before that time.In 1936, the precursor to today's Daytona 500 was born on a course that went down 1.5 miles of highway, then turned and came the same distance back up the beach.William H.G. France, a mechanic and racer who'd moved south from Washington, D.C., eventually took over the job of running the beach races on the second of two courses used for those events. In 1947, he presided over a meeting at Daytona's Streamline Hotel where NASCAR was born.
The Daytona 500 is one of the most famous races in the world. But it’s not the only race in town. Daytona International Speedway also offers Craftsman Truck Series Racing and NASCAR Nationwide Series Racing.
The Brumos Porsche 250: The Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series makes a second stop at Daytona International Speedway during the Independence Day holiday weekend for the Brumos Porsche 250, a 250-mile no-holds barred sprint race on July 3rd. The stars of Grand-Am such as Scott Pruett, Max Angelelli, Alex Gurney and David Donohue battle for victory on the tough and challenging 3.56-mile road course. This year race on July 3rd will mark the 100th edition for the Daytona Prototypes.
The concept called for an affordable class using stable rules and a platform that is designed for close and safe competition. The revolutionary machines have redefined prototype sports car racing, applying sensible rules - underscored by a firm commitment to a level playing field.
