Vic Darchinyan vs. Tomas Rojas
WBC super flyweight title
Saturday December 12, 2009
Agua Caliente Casino, Rancho Mirage, California, USA
Tomas Rojas (31-11-1, 22 KOs), the WBC interim-super flyweight champion is going to face the full champion, Vic Darchinyan (32-2-1, 26 KOs), on the Showtime telecast on December 12 at the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, California.
The 29-year-old Rojas is on a winning run of five fights after he was stopped in six rounds by Jorge Arce at Las Vegas in September 2007. He comes off a ninth round stoppage of Everado Morales in Mexico last month for the WBC interim super flyweight title.
Vic Darchinyan lost a bantamweight title fight to IBF Bantamweight Champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko (27-1-0, 22 KOs) from Ghana now fighting out of Bronx, New York by 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at the BankAtlantic Center. Darchinyan was fighting for the first time at bantamweight hoping to become the second boxer in history to win titles at flyweight, super flyweight and bantamweight.
Darchinyan-Rojas will be paired with the main event of Timothy Bradley defending his WBO 140-pound title against mandatory Lamont Peterson.
Bradley who hails from Palm Springs, the desert resort city adjacent to Rancho Mirage holds a record of 24-0-0, (11KO) will be defending his title for the 4th time since winning it in May 2008, against Lamont Peterson of Washington DC.
Peterson (27-0, 13 KOs), of Washington, D.C., who is one of the hottest prospects in boxing, is coming off a seventh-round TKO over previously unbeaten Willy Blain on April 25, 2009 for the interim WBO junior welterweight title. Now he has his first shot at a world title against a man that no one in the 140-pound division has been able to beat.
Darchinyan vs. Rojas Results: Darchinyan Wins by 2nd Round KO
Darchinyan was expected to win the bout, but he made a statement in the fashion that he got the job done. Darchinyan is victorious via a 2nd round stoppage win, and retains his super flyweight title.
