The ESPY Awards

Each July, the elite from the world of sports and entertainment come together to celebrate the best in sports. The ESPY Awards honor those individuals that through wins and losses continue to strive to be the best. This exciting event honors the top athletes from many sports, spotlights the most inspiring individuals involved with the games we love to watch, and relives the most unforgettable plays.

Once again, The University of Texas is well represented in the nominations for the upcoming 2006 ESPY Awards, the ESPN based awards show which recognizes the year's best performances, best moments and stories from the past year in sports.

Cat Osterman, named National Softball Player of the Year again by USA Softball and the Honda Award National Softball Player of the Year as well, was last year's ESPY award winner as "Best College Female Athlete". Osterman is up for that same honor once again, while quarterback Vince Young was nominated in three individual categories and the Longhorns football squad was nominated for "Best Team" and "Best Game". The ESPYs is the only awards show that combines athletic excellence
with star power and this year's lineup is truly stellar.

This year, there are 20 ESPY "Best in Sport" categories, along with 17 individual sport categories and two sponsored awards. ESPN will televise this year's ESPY sports celebration on Sunday, July 16 at 9 p.m. ET (8 p.m. Central), hosted by Tour de France champion and Austin's own Lance Armstrong. For the third year in a row, sports fans will determine the winners in all ESPY Award categories. Last year, more than 10 million votes were tabulated.
