The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic celebrates its 50th anniversary with the upcoming tournament to
be held Jan. 19-25, 2009 in California’s Coachella Valley. One of the calendar year’s first
tournaments, the Classic has always had a special place in golf fan’s hearts.
To help celebrate the event, five-time Classic champion, Arnold Palmer will serve as host for the
50th anniversary tournament. Palmer has not only played the tournament 42 of its 50 years, he also
won five of his 62 PGA Tour titles there, including his last. Palmer's 62 career wins - seven majors
- rank him fifth on the all-time wins list. But it was his go-for-broke style and approachable,
charismatic personality that made him a fan favorite.
This tournament is well-known for its celebrity pro-am, which has seen the likes of Bing Crosby,
Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Phil Harris and Desi Arnaz tee off during tournament play. For four days,
celebrities from all walks of fame join the PGA players on the course for a classic tournament.
In 1965, Bob Hope, one of Hollywood's best golfers, added his name to the tournament and became
the Classic's Board Chairmain.
This year, the Palmer Private Course at PGA West will serve as tournament’s host golf course. Other
courses in the 2009 rotation include the Bermuda Dunes Country Club, an original course in the first
tournament in 1960, La Quinta’s SilverRock Resort, another Arnold Palmer design, which debuted in 2008,
and the Nicklaus Private Course at PGA West, in the rotation for the first time.
