Bernard Hopkins vs. Enrique Ornelas
Liacouras Center, Philadelphia USA
Wednesday December 2 2009
Former undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins will fight hard-punching Enrigue Ornelas on Dec. 2 at the Liacorous Center on the campus of Temple University in his hometown of Philadelphia, for the first time since 2003. Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins knows a thing or two about winning big in Philadelphia. In his outstanding 21-year professional boxing career, Hopkins has fought 10 times in his hometown and has never lost. This matchup could decide the fate of the long awaited Bernard Hopkins-Roy Jones Jr. fight.
The fight is a tuneup to prepare for an early 2010 rematch with Roy Jones Jr. The two veterans reached an agreement two weeks ago for a rematch of their 1993 bout, which Jones won by decision. Jones fights on the same day in Australia against IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green. Both Jones and Hopkins would have to win for the rematch to move forward.
Ornelas, 29, has a record of 29-5 with 19 knockouts, but has lost three of his last seven bouts and has been stopped once. Ornelas is a tough middleweight/super middleweight. He will press the action but is undersized and never fought at light heavyweight. Most of Ornelas' defeats have been close decisions to guys like Marco Antonio Rubio, Bronco McKart and Sam Soliman.
