The Memorial Professional golf competition is a tournament that gets to be played during the week of Memorial Day, May 28th to June 3rd, 2012. Nationwide is the presenting sponsor of the Memorial Tournament starting this year for a 6-year relationship.
The competition is attractive to the players because the total purse is around $6 million with a winner share of around $1,080,000. Also, the winner gets a total of 500 FedEx Cup points to the final championship and also a nice Trophy.
One of the main features of the tournament is a yearly induction ceremony honoring past golfers. A plaque for each honoree is installed near the clubhouse at Muirfield. Jack Nicklaus himself was the honoree in 2000.
The Memorial Tournament is one of only five tournaments given "invitational" status by the PGA Tour, and consequently it has a reduced field of only 120 players (as opposed to most full-field open tournaments with a field of 156 players).
Muirfield Village Golf Club was the dream and work of Jack Nicklaus. The land was acquired in 1966, but construction did not begin until July 28, 1972. The golf course is situated on 220 acres, which includes an 11-acre driving range. The course was officially dedicated on Memorial Day, May 27, 1974, with an exhibition match between Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf. Nicklaus scored a six-under par 66, which stood as the course record until 1979.
