College Basketball Game for this week
| NCAA Basketball Wednesday: |
Syracuse vs. Virginia |
The Syracuse vs. Virginia game features two teams just barely outside of the top 25 national rankings. The Syracuse Orangemen are 4-1 with their one loss coming to last years national champion runner up Ohio State. Freshman forward Donte Greene is averaging 20.6 points and 8.8 rebounds a game in the early going. The whole offense is succeeding up until this point, with every starter averaging ten points or more. Sophomore guard Paul Harris is averaging a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing ten boards a contest.
Virginia has also only lost once, while sporting a 6-1 record. Their most impressive win this season came on the road against Arizona at one of the toughest places to win in the country. What’s keeping them out of the top 25 in a loss to Seton Hall, although the Hall is 5-0 in the early going, so the loss isn’t that awful. Virginia has had some trouble being consistent in the last few years, but under the helm of senior guard Sean Singletary they are hoping they can compete in the tough ACC. Singletary is scoring over 20 a game in addition to leading the team in assists with six a contest.
The winner of this game will most likely find themselves in the top 25. Both teams seem very evenly matched, with maybe a slight advantage going towards Virginia because of them getting to play this one at home. I think Virginia’s slight experience advantage and home crowd will pull them over in a very close game.

(5) Georgetown vs. Alabama |
Georgetown has been on the verge of making big news the last few years, and this year they seem they may have all the pieces in place. They test this in a tough early season match-up against Alabama on the road. The 7’2” senior Roy Hibbert is leading the way for the Hoyas during the early going. Hibbert is scoring 17 points and grabbing 7 rebounds a game to lead the team in both categories. The glue that is keeping it all together is guard Jessie Sapp, who leads the team with five assists per game, and is second in scoring.
Alabama is 3-1, including an unexpected loss to unheralded Belmont. Since then they have returned with a victory over Southern Mississippi, but will face 9th ranked Texas A&M before meeting Georgetown, so it’s not an easy schedule to start things off. The Crimson Tide are led by high scoring junior Richard Hendrix. To go along with his over 23 points a game, he is also averaging 14.5 rebounds a game, among tops in the nation.
While Alabama has a solid player in Hendrix, they don’t have much to complement them. Georgetown has a few players that will probably be playing in the NBA soon, so there is a talent gap there. I feel Georgetown will win this one fairly easily in their first somewhat hard road test of the year.
