2011 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400

Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 is the next race on the Nascar Sprint Cup Series stock races, this is the first one out of the 2 that will be held at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan on Father's Day on June 19, 2011. This race has had many names and sponsors during the years. It started in 1969 as the Motor state 500, in 2006 3M signed a 3-year agreement but after one year they moved its sponsorship to the fall race. The last name before the current one was LifeLock and orginally had a 3-year contract but afer 2 years they pulled out. Miller Brewing Company had the longest sporsorship from 1994-1998.The 1999 race, won by Dale Jarrett, went without a caution. At an average speed of 173.997 mph, it set the NASCAR all-time record for a 400-mile race.
Michigan International Speedway
The track is nestled on more than 1,400-plus acres in the Irish Hills of southeastern Michigan. The contruction of this track began September 28, 1967, the D-shaped oval was by Charles Moneypenny, who also designed the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway. It inlcuded several exterior and interior road courses, these were designed by Formula One great Stirling Moss, today those course are no longer used. The last time the courses were used were in 1973 (exterior) and in 1984 (interior).
Lawrence H. LoPatin, a Detroit-area land developer who built the speedway at an estimated cost of $4-6 million. The saucer-shaped, 18-degree banking provided exciting racing right from the start. The Inaugural Race took place on October 13, 1968. The 250-mile Indy-style event posted a purse second at the time only to the Indianapolis 500. Ronnie Bucknum collected $20,088 as the first driver to take the checkered flag.
The Speedway has had several owners, after Lopatin it was bought by Roger Penske in 1973. In July of 1999, Penske Motorsports, Inc. was purchased by the country's leader of motorsports entertainment - International Speedway Corp. ISC was founded by another visionary - Bill France - who built the world-famous Daytona International Speedway and founded NASCAR, the country's most popular racing series. The ISC is the owner of many motorsports venues.
