Joseph Bramlett, the first black golfer to advance through the PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament since 1985, was named Monday as the recipient of this year's Northern Trust Open Exemption. Each year, the Northern Trust Open Exemption provides a playing opportunity for a top golfer who represents the advancement of diversity in golf. This exemption has been given to two other golfers in the past years Vincent Jonnson in 2009 and Joshue Wooding in 2010, but Bramlett is the first PGA TOUR member to receive the honor.
The Northern Trust Open is held on the course of Riviera Country Club. Mercedes-Benz has been named Official Car Sponsor of the Northern Trust Open. The overall prize equals 5.1 million US dollars, the winner gets 918 thousand.
What started as the Los Angeles Open and then the Nissan Open, is now-named Northern Trust Open. The Northern Trust Open has been known by different names throughout its decades-long history, including the Los Angeles Open and the Glen Campbell-Los Angeles Open. The first event was held in 1926, and it's been played every year since except for 1943, when the tournament was cancelled due to World War II. Several historic golfers have won the event, including Tom Watson, Johnny Miller and Arnold Palmer.
There have been some great champions in L.A. Open past including Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Lawson Little,
Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, and the legendary great Ben Hogan. Riviera Country Club is the host golf course
and is also known as Hogan's Alley.
The tournament is conceived by the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Los Angeles). They have been managing the
tournament since its inception in 1926. This event has already generated and contributed more than $50 million
in charitable funding.

and the 1998 tournament was held at Valencia Country Club due to the U.S. Senior Open at Riviera.
