The Pocono 500 comes in early June, Pocono Raceway has long been recognized as one of NASCAR's most competitive raceways. For the 35th consecutive season, Pocono Raceway has two NASCAR Cup events scheduled, the Pocono 500 on June 7 and the Pennsylvania 500 Aug. 2.
Pocono Raceway has a unique design. Each turn is modeled after turns at 3 different tracks. Turn One (14 degree banking) was modeled after the now defunct Trenton Speedway, Turn Two (also known as "The Tunnel Turn") is like Indianapolis Motor Speedway (9 degree banking), and Turn 3 (6 degree banking) is similar to The Milwaukee Mile. It could be said to be a tri-oval, but the turns are much more severe than those of a more typical tri-oval such as Daytona and the track is really nearly a triangle.
The 2.5-mile, tri-oval super-speedway is kindest to drivers who start from the front row. Five of the past six winners at Pocono have started the race from the pole. Kasey Kahne won in June from the pole while Denny Hamlin has two wins as the pole-sitter. The other Busch, Kurt, has won here twice from the outside. Jeff Gordon is the only other winner at Pocono, in 2007, who won at Pocono and did not start at the front of the grid; he started 18th and won it.
Bet on Top NASCAR drivers, as they try to make history at Pocono. Gamblers should wait until qualifying to bet this race so they can leverage their position as much possible. Another thing gamblers need to pay attention to, and we have seen how important this is throughout the season, is pit-position.
Pocono is one of a very few NASCAR tracks not owned by either Speedway Motorsports, Inc. or International Speedway Corporation, the dominant track owners in NASCAR. It is owned by the Mattioli family, which also owns South Boston Speedway in South Boston, Virginia.
Pocono is used throughout the year by sports car and motorcycle clubs as well as racing schools. The triangular oval also has three separate infield sections of racetrack - North Course, East Course and South Course.
