The Pocono 500 comes mid June, Pocono Raceway has long been recognized as one of NASCAR's most competitive raceways. For the 32nd consecutive season, Pocono Raceway has two NASCAR Cup events scheduled, the Pocono 500 on June 12th, 2011 and the Pennsylvania 500
Pocono Raceway has a unique design. Each turn is modeled after turns at 3 different tracks. Turn One (14 degree banking) was modeled after the now defunct Trenton Speedway, Turn Two (also known as "The Tunnel Turn") is like Indianapolis Motor Speedway (9 degree banking), and Turn 3 (6 degree banking) is similar to The Milwaukee Mile. It could be said to be a tri-oval, but the turns are much more severe than those of a more typical tri-oval such as Daytona and the track is really nearly a triangle.
The 2.5-mile, tri-oval super-speedway is kindest to drivers who start from the front row. Five of the past six winners at Pocono have started the race from the pole. Kasey Kahne won in June from the pole while Denny Hamlin has two wins as the pole-sitter. The other Busch, Kurt, has won here twice from the outside. Jeff Gordon is the only other winner at Pocono, in 2007, who won at Pocono and did not start at the front of the grid; he started 18th and won it.
Bet on Top NASCAR drivers, as they try to make history at Pocono. Gamblers should wait until qualifying to bet this race so they can leverage their position as much possible. Another thing gamblers need to pay attention to, and we have seen how important this is throughout the season, is pit-position.
Pocono is one of a very few NASCAR tracks not owned by either Speedway Motorsports, Inc. or International Speedway Corporation, the dominant track owners in NASCAR. It is owned by the Mattioli family, which also owns South Boston Speedway in South Boston, Virginia. Several times Pocono Raceway was in serious danger on closing and the Mattioli family was about to sell the racetrack when they got advised and support ffrom Bill France Jr. , so in 1990 the rebuilding of the Pocono Raceway started, for a course of ten years lots of new changes have been into effect and today it is one of the best tracks in the USA. The Mattioli family had a goal when they started in the rebulding of the Raceway, to have the have the Prettiest, Friendliests and Cleanest tracks, not the famous or richest one. They have achieved their goal. They have built the biggest and most fan friendly Paddock Area so that fans are only 56 feet away from the cars.
Pocono is used throughout the year by sports car and motorcycle clubs as well as racing schools. The triangular oval also has three separate infield sections of racetrack - North Course, East Course and South Course.

Tony Stewart Wins Pocono 2009

The driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala SS is in his first year as a driver/owner in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, but you'd never know it by looking at the box scores of the past 13 races or the championship point standings. With six top-five finishes and a series leading nine top-10s, Stewart sits atop the points by 46 markers over four-time Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon.
