The South African Open Championship is one of the oldest national open golf championships in the world, and is one of the principal tournaments on the Sunshine Tour. The first event was organized in 1903, since 1997 it has also been co-sanctioned by the European Tour, and as the flagship event on the Sunshine Tour, the tournament also receives special status from the Official World Golf Ranking, with the winner being guaranteed a minimum of 32 points regardless of the strength of the field. The field for this golf event consist of 156 professionals and amateurs.
The Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate is the venue that hosts the 2011 and 2012 championships, before this it was held at the Durban Country Club. It is a Jack Nicklaus Golf Course with a 27-hole with 7,761 yards (7,097 m) in the Gauteng, just recently it was named the best new golf course by Golf Digest. The 18-hole course is called Masai Mara in the language of the Masai mean wide open plains, it has a rugged grassland and dune-scape look. It has a unique feature of a par-fice eight hole with its island green. Everything was built according to USGA specifications.
The most successful player on this golf event Gary Player winning 13 titles between 1956 and 1981, Bobby Locke is the runner up to this event with 9 titles.
