The St. Jude Classic holds the distinction of being one of the longest running events on the PGA TOUR. It is a tournament steeped in golf history and a tradition of commitment to saving the lives children around the world affected by catastrophic diseases. Since 1970, the event has been able to raised over $24 million for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. All the benefits of this tournament go towards and only to this institution.

The tournament, now known as the St. Jude Classic, was founded in 1958 as the Memphis Open by seven Memphis businessmen who hatched their plan in the grill at the old Colonial Country Club in East Memphis. With an initial purse of $20,000, the founders had little idea that their creation would one day become the national event it is today. Billy Maxwell won that inaugural event and collected $2,800.

The St. Jude Classic tournament is going to take place at the TPC Southwind at Memphis, Tennessee, from June 3 to June 10, 2012.

Format: 72 holes (18 holes for four days), stroke play
Cut: After 36 holes, field will be cut to low 70 scorers and all golfers tied for 70th place; after 54 holes, field will be cut to low 70 and ties (not to exceed 78 players).
Playoff: (if necessary) Sudden Death on holes 18-11-12-18 (subject to review early in Tournament Week).
Purse: $5,600,000 — Championship Pro-Am $10,000
Winner’s Share: $1,008,000

The TPC Southwind is a private club that has hosted the St. Jude Classic since 1989. It is an 18-hole championship designed by Ron Prichard in consultation with Hubert Green and Fuzzy Zoeller. It is a member of the Tournament Players club opened on 1988. The length of the course is 7,244 yards with a 70 par. The club has full-service golf, a practice facility and dining options. Prichard incorporated the subtle nuances of the existing topography into the course design, creating a picturesque natural layout highlighted by corridors of undulating zoysia fairways, champion Bermuda greens and numerous lakes, streams and ponds. In 2007 it was ranked among the top 10 toughest courses on the PGA Tour.
