The Sylvania 300 is the first race out of 10 race playoff for the "Chase for the Sprint Cup" of the 12 best drivers standing after the Air Ward 400 formely known as the Chevy Rock and Roll. This will be the last year when this race will be the opening race for this series, for 2011 it was announced that the LifeLock 400 in Chicagoland will be the first race of this playoffs and the Sylvania 300 will be the second one.
The New Hampshire Motor Speedway is known for being one of the most difficult oval circuit on motorsports, several fatal crashes have taken place not only during the actual competitions but also during practice runs. It is the only Sprint Cup race outside of Daytona and Talladega to run a restrictor plate race since the adoption of the current 358 cubic inch formula. NASCAR routinely states that the Sprint Cup restrictor plate reduces engine power from approximately 750 hp to approximately 430 hp.
This race had had several different names throughout the years:
CMT 300 (1997)
Farm Aid on CMT 300 (1998)
Dura Lube/Kmart 300 (1999)
Dura Lube 300 sponsored by Kmart (2000)
New Hampshire 300 (2001-2002)
