UFC 101 Declaration - B.J. Penn vs. Kenny Florian
Date: Saturday, August 8, 2009
Venue: Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Penn

The Wachovia Center will host UFC 101, which is home to the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers, can accommodate more than 22,000 spectators.

Anderson Silva will be moving up to 205lbs. for the second time in his UFC career. The middleweight champion is coming off of two controversial wins against Thales Leites at UFC 97 and Patrick Cote at UFC 90.

A light-heavyweight bout between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and former 205-pound title-holder Forrest Griffin, marking Silva’s second fight in the light heavweight division. The middleweight champion is coming off of two controversial wins against Thales Leites at UFC 97 and Patrick Cote at UFC 90. At UFC 97 Anderson Silva entered the fight as a significant favorite, and though he won a lopsided unanimous-decision victory, Anderson Silva was criticized for what seemed a conservative game plan in which he opted not to follow Leites, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, to the ground.

Silva will counter with his quick-strike muay thai game and devastating ground skills, but Griffin might be too big to be submitted by Silva in this one. Regardless of the outcome, Griffin has the kind of moxie and aggressive style to make this fight way more entertaining than Silva’s last one against Thales Leites.

The UFC will share co-main-event honors with a lightweight championship bout between title-holder B.J. Penn and Kenny Florian. This will be Penns first lightweight title defense since a May 2008 TKO win over Sean Sherk. The Florian fight marks more than 14 months between defenses. It appears that BJ Penn is ready to move on from the controversy surrounding his loss to Georges St. Pierre and will have a stiff test ahead of him in the vastly improved Kenny Florian. Kenny Florian is not a newcomer to UFC fans in fact he is coming into the Main Event riding a six game winning streak, with notable victories over Joe Stevenson, Roger Huerta, Joe Lauzon and Din Thomas. This will be his second chance at the lightweight title and even though he lost his first attempt he is focused and confident he will win. Florian in fact sees Penn as a living legend and would love to beat one of the best fighters in all of UFC.

The pay-per-view main card will also host Johny Hendricks vs. Amir Sadollah, Ricardo Almeida vs. Kendall Grove, and Josh Neer vs. Kurt Pellgrino.

Shane Nelson vs. Aaron Riley, John Howard vs. Tamdan McCrory, Dan Cramer vs. Matthew Riddle, Rob Emerson vs. George Sotiropoulos, and Jesse Lennox vs. Danillo Villefort were confirmed for the unaired preliminary card.
