UFC 104: Mauricio “Shogun” Rua Vs Lyoto Machida
Date: October 24, 2009
Time: 10PM ET/7PM PT
Location: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
Broadcast: PPV Live

UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and top contender Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, as well as the co-headliners, heavyweights Cain Velasquez and Ben Rothwell will face off in the octagon at UFC 104.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua Vs Lyoto Machida

Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida, fighting out of Belem, Brazil. With a perfect 15-0 record and three finishes in his last three fights, the 31-year-old Brazilian has dominated the UFC light heavyweight division. His highlight-reel second-round knockout of undefeated Rashad Evans not only captured the UFC light heavyweight belt, but established Machida as an international superstar. With an unorthodox style and a Machida Karate black belt, Machida remains one of the hardest targets to hit in the Octagon. The lifelong martial artist also holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and is dangerous anywhere the fight goes.

Shogun, once ruling the roost in the light heavyweight division, quickly fell from grace when he made the move to the UFC. His first time in the Octagon, he lost to Forrest Griffin at UFC 76, then was heavily criticized for a lackluster effort in his TKO victory over an aging Mark Coleman at UFC 93. His last time out, however, Shogun may have sent former champ Chuck Liddell sprawling into retirement with a stunning first round TKO at UFC 97.

Heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez (6-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) will face Ben Rothwell (30-6 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC 104.

Rothwell (30-6), an IFL veteran who trains under Pat Miletich and Duke Roufus, had won 13-straight fights, including wins over Roy Nelson and Krzysztof Soszynski, before suffering his first loss in nearly four years at the hands of Andrei Arlovski at Affliction: Banned last July. Rothwell rebounded at Adrenaline MMA 2 in December, scoring a first-round submission of Chris Guillen.

Meanwhile Cain Velasquez (6-0) is coming off one of the biggest wins of his early career when he took a unanimous decision triumph over Cheick Kongo back at UFC 99 in the month of June to be vaulted to a short list of contenders to vie for the UFC Heavyweight championship along with Shane Carwin, but with Carwin getting the title shot Velasquez will likely have to pick up the win over Rothwell in order to secure his shot later down the line.

Gleison Tibau (17-7) vs. Josh Neer (25-8-1)

Tibau could make a major statement with a win against the former champ. Tibau is coming off a decision loss (split) after Melvin Guillard took him the distance at the TUF 9 Finale less than a month ago. It snapped a two-fight win streak for the Brazilian, who’s been up and down since his debut against Nick Diaz at UFC 65 way back in November 2006.

Neer (25-8-1) last competed at “UFC 101: Declaration” on Aug. 1 where he lost a unanimous decision to Kurt "Batman" Pellegrino. Prior to that Neer defeated “The Ultimate Fighter” Mac Danzig via submission (triangle choke) at “UFC Fight Night 17,” where both Danzing and Neer was awarded a $30,000 “Fight of the Night” bonus for their collective performance.
