UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez
When: December 12, 2009
Where: FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee
How: PPV |
The Prodigy will face a challenger as willing as he is to leave it all on the line in The Ultimate Fighter season one winner Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez, who has reinvented himself as a relentless cardio machine that won’t stop moving forward until he wears the UFC championship belt around his waist.
A Penn vs. Sanchez fight offers as much potential for excitement as any fight this year. Both men have reputations as fast starters, excellent grapplers and dangerous strikers. In B.J. Penn last trip to the octagon, Penn (14-5-1) earned an impressive submission victory over Kenny Florian at UFC 101, while Sanchez (21-2) won a split-decision in an exciting bout with Clay Guida at the TUF 9 finale.
Although Penn is a more technical striker, Sanchez might be best served keeping it on the feet, where his aggression and skill fighting on the inside might serve him well. On the ground, Penn's creativity and flexibility make him dangerous for anyone, even someone as skilled in jiu-jitsu as Sanchez.
The UFC also confirmed that Frank Mir will be looking to bounce back from his recent defeat at the oversized hands of Brock Lesnar after putting together three consecutive wins in the Octagon while Kongo is in the same boat, having recently suffered a loss to Cain Velasquez following three straight wins with the UFC.
Kongo (14-5-1) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to fast rising heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez at UFC 99 last month and dropping his record to 7-3 in 10 fights with the UFC. Kongo holds notable wins Antoni Hardonk, Assuerio Silva, and Mirko Filipovic. Eleven of Kongo's fourteen career wins have come by way of stoppage.
Mir (12-4) is coming off a loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 100 earlier this month in a heavyweight title unification bout. Prior to the loss, he'd won three straight over Antoni Hardonk, Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira respectively. All but two of Mir's 16 career bouts have come with the UFC. Mir made his UFC debut back in November 2001 at UFC 34 and holds notable wins over Wes Sims, Tim Sylvia, Roberto Traven and Tank Abbott.
