Tyson Griffin vs Sean Sherk
Rising 155-pound star Tyson Griffin will put his four fight winning streak on the line at the Allstate Arena
in Chicago, when he squares off against his most accomplished foe to date, former UFC lightweight champion
Sean Sherk, in a key matchup on the UFC 90 main card.
Sherk (32-3-1), a former UFC lightweight champion, was stripped of his title following a July 2007
victory over Hermes Franca after testing positive for steroids. The positive test, which was appealed,
was ultimately upheld and Sherk returned from his six-month suspension in May to take on lightweight champ
BJ Penn. Penn topped Sherk via third-round TKO and now the former UFC 155-pound champion, whose lone losses
have come against Penn, Georges St. Pierre, and Matt Hughes, will look to rebound against Griffin.
Griffin (12-1) opened his MMA career with eight-straight victories, including a win over urijah Faber and
a UFC debut victory against David Lee, but sufered his first career loss to Frank Edgar at UFC 67 in
early-2007. He’s since bounced back with four straight victories inside the octagon over Clay Guida,
Thiago Tavares, Gleison Tibau, and Marcus Aurelio.
Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote
Canadian Patrick (The Predator) Cote will fight for the UFC middleweight title on Oct. 25 when he takes on
champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90 in Chicago. Should Cote win the title, he will join fellow Montrealer
Georges St. Pierre as UFC champion.
Cote (14-4) earned his title shot with a decision over Ricardo Almeida at UFC 86 on July 5. The 185-pounder
from Montreal is riding a four-fight win streak in the UFC, with previous victories over Scott Smith, Kendall Grove
and Drew McFedries.
It took Silva (22-4) just 61 seconds to defeat his last opponent, James "The Sandman" Irvin at UFC Fight Night
in Las Vegas July 19, but that is par for the course for "The Spider", who burst on to the UFC scene two years ago.
His list of victims started with a devastating knockout of Chris Leben in June 2006. He followed that up with
two TKOs over Rich Franklin, a submission win over Travis Lutter, a TKO over Nate Marquardt and a second round
submission over PRIDE 183-pound champion Dan Henderson. Silva, considered by most to be the most dominant force
the UFC middleweight division has ever seen, now faces number one middleweight contender Patrick "The Predator" Cote.
Shannon Gugerty vs. Spencer Fisher
Shannon Gugerty (11-2) will likely replace Melvin Guillard and face Spencer Fisher (21-4) At UFC 90 on Oct.
25 from the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois.
Gugerty made a successful UFC debut at UFC Fight Night “Silva vs. Irvin” by submitting Dale Hartt in
the first round.
Spencer Fisher is coming off of an impressive win over the young Jeremy Stephens and Guillard is coming of
a brutal KO of Denis Siver.
Rich Clementi vs. Gray Maynard
Lightweights Rich Clementi and Gray Maynard are likely to meet at UFC 90 on October 25th in Chicago.
Clementi (32-12-1), a long-rumored UFC 90 participant, has won six-straight bouts including four-straight
UFC victories over Anthony Johnson, Melvin Guillard, Sam Stout, and Terry Etim.
Maynard (5-0), who advanced to the semifinals on The Ultimate Fighter 5, fought Rob Emerson to a no contest
in his UFC debut but has since won three-straight bouts inside the octagon over Joe Veres, Dennis Siver,
and Frank Edgar.
