Anderson Silva, the best pound-for-pound MMA fighter in the world, is expected to step back into the Octagon at UFC 97 in April to defend his middleweight title against Thales Leites in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on April 18.
Anderson Silva (23-4), this will be his second straight middleweight title defense against an opponent who will be a huge underdog. Silva looked bored in winning a ho-hum third-round TKO victory over Patrick Cote at UFC 90, and we can only hope we’ll see a more intense version of Silva at UFC 97.
Silva is on an nine-fight win streak, eight of which have come under the UFC banner. And none of those fights have gone past the second round, with the exception of his bizarre match against Patrick Cote at UFC 90.
Thales Leites is fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Leites (14-1) has rattled off five straight wins inside that Octagon. And that includes a slick rear naked choke over the hard-hitting Drew McFedries at UFC 90 on October 25.
Leites recently made headlines with a controversial split decision win over perennial contender, Nathan Marquardt, at UFC 85: “Bedlam” back in June. His only career loss is to Martin Kampmann in his promotional debut way back in 2006. He’s going to have to find a way to pull off what seems to be an impossible mission in overcoming the champ.
Another Exciting UFC 97 matchup will include, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua Vs. former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell. The two were originally scheduled to meet at UFC 85 in June 2008 but Rua had to pull out due to a leg injury.
The bout will be Liddell's first since a devastating knockout loss to Rashad Evans in September 2008. The former champion has gone just 1-3 in his past four bouts, including losses to Evans, Keith Jardine and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
Rua (17-3) failed to impress despite beating Coleman at UFC 93 in Dublin, Ireland. Rua himself tired and had trouble finishing the open target Coleman, who became exhausted within the first round. Rua was able land an uppercut in the third to put Coleman down leading the referee to questionably stop the fight.
Still, Rua finally records his first UFC win after a disappointing debut against Forrest Griffin at UFC 76 and missing over a year due to knee injuries.
The two feared strikers were once considered by many as the world's top-two light heavyweights. Rua has earned 14 of his 17 career victories by knockout or TKO while Liddell secured 13 of his 21 career wins in the same manner.
More UFC 97 Heavy Wieght Action will take place with Cheick Kongo Vs. Antoni Hardonk
Kongo, 13-4-1, is currently on a two fight win streak with consecutive victories over Dan Evensen at UFC 87 and Mustapha al Turk at UFC 92. A veteran of eight UFC fights, Kongo is 6-2 and is considered a contender for the UFC heavyweight title that’s currently held by Brock Lesnar.
Hardonk, 8-4, has won his last three fights in the Octagon including wins over Colin Robinson at UFC 80, Eddie Sanchez at UFC 85, and Mike Wessel at UFC 92. After beginning his UFC career1-2, Hardonk has improved to 4-2 and a win over Kongo would likely move him into the title contender picture.
