Event name: UFC 98: Evans vs. Machida
Date: May 23, 2009
Location: Las Vegas, Nevada
Venue: MGM Grand Garden Arena
Broadcast: Pay-Per-View (10pm ET)
UFC 98 is headlined by a UFC light-heavyweight championship bout between title-holder Rashad Evans (13-0-1 MMA, 8-0-1) and top contender Lyoto Machida (14-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC), and "The Ultimate Fighter 6" coaches Matt Hughes (42-7 MMA, 15-5 UFC) and Matt Serra (9-5 MMA, 6-5 UFC) meet in the co-main event.
Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson of Irvine became the No. 1 contender for Evans after he defeated Keith Jardine at UFC 96. Jackson, who will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair ligament damage in his jaw, will face the Evans-Machida winner at a date to be determined. Machida comes into this fight as a convincing -200 favorite, while Rashad Evans is listed as a +160 underdog.
A successful $100 wager on the champ would yield a total profit of $160, while a successful $200 wager on Machida would yield a total profit of $100.
Matt Hughes Vs. Matt Serra
Arch enemies Matt Hughes and Matt Serra will finally face off in the Octagon to settle their bitter score
Serra and Hughes — who were the opposing coaches in The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 and were supposed to fight at UFC 79: “Nemesis” in December 2007. However, Serra had to withdraw because of a serious back injury.
Both former welterweight champions have been sidelined with injuries — Serra sustained an elbow injury in his loss to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2 this last April and Hughes has been nursing a knee injury that he suffered in his loss to Thiago Alves at UFC 85 last June.
The good news this time around is that we now have a firm date, location and likely event number for the 170-pound showdown — important details that were absent prior to this point.
Lightweights Sean Sherk and Frank Edgar will square off in a featured bout at UFC 98.
Sherk (36-3-1), a former 155-pound title-holder, earned three straight victories over Nick Diaz, Kenny Florian, and Hermes Franca between 2006 and 2007, but was stripped of the lightweight belt and suspended after testing positive for steroids following his win over Franca in July 2007. Sherk immediately challenged champion BJ Penn for the title upon returning to the octagon last May, but suffered a third-round TKO. He rebounded from the loss with a unanimous decision victory over Tyson Griffin in the “Fight of the Night” at UFC 90 in October.
A four-time collegiate wrestling national qualifier at Clarion University, Edgar (9-1) began his UFC career with three straight wins over Tyson Griffin, Mark Bocek, and Spencer Fisher, but suffered his first career loss to Gray Maynard last April. He bounced back from the loss in July with a unanimous decision victory over former 155-pound challenger Hermes Franca.
Also guaranteed time on the broadcast is a middleweight bout between top contender Yushin Okami (23-4 MMA, 7-1 UFC) and Dan Miller (11-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC). So, too, is a lightweight bout between former champ Sean Sherk (33-3-1 MMA, 7-3 UFC) and contender Frankie Edgar (9-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC).
