Event: UFC Fight Night 14
Date: Saturday, July 19, 2008, at 9 p.m. ET on Spike TV
Location: The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada
UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (21-4 MMA, 6-0 UFC) will make his light-heavyweight debut and take on veteran fighter James Irvin (14-4 MMA, 5-3 UFC) at a July 19 UFC event.
The Spider" Silva steps back into the Octagon making his debut appearance at Light Heavyweight to take on James "The Sandman" Irvin. Silva,
who's proven to be nearly unstoppable in the UFC's 185-pound division. This fight will mark Silva's UFC debut at 205 lbs. Insiders say the UFC had briefly considered matching Silva up with former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell, though the bout never evolved. He'll now fight Irvin in a non-title fight.
Irvin, who made his UFC debut in 2005, is 5-3 in the organization and 3-1 in his past four UFC fights. He most recently defeated Houston Alexander with an eight-second knockout (via Superman punch). However, he's never been considered one of the division's top contenders, and on a few occasions, openly stated that he was possibly one loss away from losing his UFC contract.
Also scheduled for the event is a heavyweight showdown between Cain Velasquez and recently re-signed Jake O'Brien. Anthony Johnson, coming off an
impressive knockout of Tommy Speer will take on Kevin Burns who recently won his UFC debut at UFC 85 against Roan Carneiro with a second round triangle choke.

The UFC will get an injection of new blood on Saturday, July 19th, as six newcomers will get their first shot at glory in the Octagon when they face off against each other in preliminary bouts on the Anderson Silva vs James Irvin card at The Palms in Las Vegas.
The event will take place in Las Vegas, most likely at The Palms Casino Resort.
On the same night, "Affliction: Banned" will take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. In addition to Emelianenko and Sylvia, the fight card features notables such as Josh Barnett, Matt Lindland, Andrei Arlovski, Ben Rothwell, Renato "Babalu" Sobral and others.
Without official confirmation from the UFC this is true, it's intriguing nevertheless. Irvin will stand in front of Silva, which should make for an interesting exchange. And talk about the UFC bringing out the big guns to compete with Affliction. There is no Liddell or Rampage on the card, but following on the heels of July 5th event, the UFC buzz will already be in the air. This will ostensibly carry forward that momentum enough to drown out interest in Affliction. And while Affliction will be juxtaposed next to the UFC on matters of "what to watch", the choice between paying for people only hardcores have heard of versus the light heavyweight debut of Anderson Silva seems to me a very clear "either-or" proposition.
