The Wyndham Championship is a regular golf tournament on the PGA Tour. It is played annually in Greensboro, North Carolina, U.S. and was originally called the Greater Greensboro Open. In 2007, the event was renamed the Wyndham Championship when Wyndham Hotels & Resorts took over from Daimler Chrysler as main sponsor. It moved from an autumn date to mid-August and is the last PGA Tour event before the Playoffs for the FedEx Cup. The 2012 event will be the 73rd annual Wyndham edition of these championship.
The 2012 Wyndham Championship will have a star-studded field, among the players that will be joining for this event are: Sergio Garcia, Jason Day, Rory Sabbatini which were the last ones to ge added to this year field. Other players are Webb Simpson, Davis Love III, Bill Hass, Jason Dufner, Brandt Snedeker, Carl Pettersson, Ryan More, Syo Ishkawa, Nick Watney, Camilo Villegas, Fredrick Jacobson, Nicolas Colsaerts, Charl Shcwartazel, trevor Immelman, David Toms, John Daly, Lucas Glover, Justin Leonard and Angel Cabrera.
The tournament was founded in 1938 as the Greater Greensboro Open. This tournament was usually contested in April or May, until a schedule change in 2003 which moved the tournament toward the end of the season. Sam Snead set a PGA Tour record for his 8 wins at the event, as well as his 1965 event, which made him the oldest player to win a PGA Tour event (both records still stand). The 2010 purse was $5,100,000, with $918,000 going to the winner.
The Sedgefield Country Club was owned by A.W. McAlister, a prominent Greensboro businessman whose avid interest in golf led to the incorporation of Sedgefield Country Club in 1925. Over the years the configuration of the golf course changed many times, for a variety of reasons. For many years (1938-1961) it was the alternate site of the Greater Greensboro Open with Starmount Forest Country Club. Then, for 16 years, Sedgefield hosted the GGO through 1976. In 2007, the course was restored to the original Donald Ross design and in 2008, the GGO returned home as the Wyndham Championship.
