The Sedgefield Country Club was owned by A.W. McAlister, a prominent Greensboro businessman whose avid interest in golf led to the incorporation of Sedgefield Country Club in 1925. Over the years the configuration of the golf course changed many times, for a variety of reasons. For many years (1938-1961) it was the alternate site of the Greater Greensboro Open with Starmount Forest Country Club. Then, for 16 years, Sedgefield hosted the GGO through 1976. In 2007, the course was restored to the original Donald Ross design and in 2008, the GGO returned home as the Wyndham Championship.
The Wyndham Championship is a regular golf tournament on the PGA Tour. It is played annually in Greensboro, North Carolina, U.S. and was originally called the Greater Greensboro Open. In 2007, the event was renamed the Wyndham Championship when Wyndham Hotels & Resorts took over from Daimler Chrysler as main sponsor. It moved from an autumn date to mid-August and is the last PGA Tour event before the Playoffs for the FedEx Cup.
The tournament was founded in 1938 as the Greater Greensboro Open. This tournament was usually contested in April or May, until a schedule change in 2003 which moved the tournament toward the end of the season. Sam Snead set a PGA Tour record for his 8 wins at the event, as well as his 1965 event, which made him the oldest player to win a PGA Tour event (both records still stand). The 2010 purse was $5,100,000, with $918,000 going to the winner.
This year the Wyndham field the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th-ranked players in the world: 16th Paul Casey, 17th Ian Poulter, 18th Kyung-Tae Kim, and 19th David Toms. Also this year it is anounced that the Wyndham has extended its title sponsorship of the Wyndham Championship, one of the TOUR's longest-running tournaments, for four years through 2016.
