The PGA Tour returns to the suburbs of New Orleans to the TPC Louisiana, and anytime you hear the words "Pete Dye designed" you know the course will be a challenge for the golfers this week. The Tournament Players Club of Louisiana is ready to swing back on the national golf stage after a two-year intermission forced by Hurricane Katrina. Katrina temporarily closed the PGA-owned TPC for 10 months after it downed 2,000 trees and flooded more than 30 its 250 acres.
Stretching over 250 acres of wetlands across along the Mississippi River delta, the course is a grand representation of the natural local habitat. The course is part of the Audubon Golf Trail and a proud member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary program – providing a landscape that many have compared to a private nature reserve.
The TPC Louisiana course, a 7,341 yard, par-72. $1.16 million of the $6.2 million total purse goes to the winner along with the winner's share of FedEx Cup Points. Bet the early rounds and catch all the weekend PGA betting action on NBC.
Three of the top 10 players in the World Golf Rankings—Graeme McDowell (5), Steve Stricker (8) and Luke Donald (9)—have made early commitments to playing the ZurichClassic of New Orleans April 25-May 1.other players that will also be this event include, 2010 champion Jason Bohn and early 2011 PGA TOUR winners Jhonny Vegas and Bubba Watson. More players include Rickie Fowler, Camilo Villegas, Ben Crane and Justin Rose, 2009 Champion Jerry Kelly, winner David Toms,Vijay Singh, Nick Watney.
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is one of the PGA TOUR’s oldest events. The tournament began in 1938, and TPC Louisiana is the fourth home. World Golf Hall of Famers like Byron Nelson, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus have made their mark in New Orleans, along with today’s top stars like local favorite David Toms and the 2004 champion, Vijay Singh. In 2005, Tim Petrovic won his first PGA TOUR title in New Orleans at the TPC Louisiana with a score of 13-under. First National Bank of Commerce (FNBC) was the tournament's first corporate sponsor in 1975.
The Zurich Classic also helps local charity, the one that they directly work with is the Fore!Kids Foundation is a group of men and women dedicated to raising funds for children’s charities. Fore!Kids generates funds through the production of golf-related events to support activities and programs benefiting youth. Over the years they have raised over $20 million to help these charities.
