NFL Sunday Game of the Week

(8-0) New England Patriots vs. (7-0) Indianapolis Colts

Sometimes when I’m deciding what game to choose for the game of the week I have to pick between a few games.  This week was the easiest time I’ve ever had picking a game.  The New England Patriots-Indianapolis Colts showdown is already being talked about as the most hyped regular season game in NFL history.  It makes sense too, because at no point in the history of the NFL have two undefeated teams met this late into the season.  It also helps that the Patriots and Colts have a great history, with both teams usually having to get through each other to advance in the playoffs.  Speaking of playoffs, many fans also see this game as perhaps a preview of the AFC championship.  If this one does live up to the hype then fans could be talking about this one for years.

With the Patriots blowing everyone out of the water the Colts have been somewhat overlooked this year, as hard as that is to imagine.  After all, they are the defending Super Bowl Champions, and they are going deep into a season undefeated, again.  Leading the way for the Colts once again is Peyton Manning.  Manning isn’t putting up crazy numbers like his counterpart Tom Brady, but he playing very well.  Manning is completing 65.2 percent of his passes and has thrown 13 touchdowns on just three interceptions.  His rating for the year is a very good 102.9, among the tops in the league.  Manning’s top receiving threat this year has been Reggie Wayne, and Marvin Harrison has been dealing with some nagging injuries this year.  Wayne has enjoyed the spotlight, catching 44 balls with five touchdowns.  Also enjoying a breakout season has been tight end Dallas Clark.  Clark has already caught six touchdown passes this year, making him a serious threat.  While the Patriots have scored over 100 more points then the Colts this year, the Colts have actually gave up less points, by a margin of 102-127.  A lot of the points the Pats have given up have came at the end of games they had dominated throughout, but the Colts defense will still easily be the best the Pats have faced.

Brady’s numbers are out of this world.  In just eight games, Brady has already thrown more touchdowns this year (30) then he had in any other season.  He is completing an unbelievable 74.2 percent of his passes.  His rating is 136.2.  He worst rating for any game this year was 105.7.  Brady and Manning have been compared since they both emerged on the scene, but people are finally getting to see what Brady can do when he has some offensive threats, namely Randy Moss.  If Moss has supposedly lost a step, he found it again this year.   Moss is starting to threat the single season touchdown record of Jerry Rice’s 22.  Moss already has 11, and is averaging a huge 16.6 yards per catch in the process.  Wes Walker has also come out of nowhere to catch 56 balls, and six touchdowns.  If you think you can stop the Pats on the ground, you are also mistaken.  Both Sammy Morris and Laurence Maroney are averaging over 4.5 yards per carry.  As noted, the defense have given up a few points, but most of these points have came at meaningless points of a ball game where the Patriots were already up by a ton, like the seven points they gave up to the Redskins last week en route to beating them 52-7.

It’s easy to overlook the Colts here because of the great start the Patriots are off to.  But, they are playing in Indianapolis, and the crowd will be at a fever pitch.  If the Patriots are able to come into the Colts field and steamroll them I think talks of the Patriots being the best team ever would be greatly considered.  It’s only halfway through the season, but the Pats are making things look easy.  I put my foot in my mouth last week suggesting the Redskins would give the Patriots a tough game.  We see how that turned out.  Unlike the Redskins, the Colts are more able to compete in a shootout, if it comes to that, which fans are expecting.  In the game of the year I am taking the Patriots, 41-35, in a preview of what to expect in the playoffs.
