• Site: Winged Foot Golf Club, Mamaroneck, N.Y.
• Defending champion: Michael Campbell |
The last time the U.S. Open was played at Winged Foot was 1984, and first-prize money was
$94,000 for Fuzzy Zoeller, who beat Greg Norman in an 18-hole playoff (67-75) after sharing the lead
at 4-under-par 276 through 72 holes. The 2006 winner will receive at least $1,170,000 (2005 total).
2005 CHAMPION - Michael Campbell made an important birdie from 25 feet on the par 3 17th hole
that held off Tiger Woods by two strokes as he became the first New Zealander to win the U.S. Open.
He also was the first sectional qualifier to win the Open since Steve Jones in 1996. More 2005 U.S Open Results and info.

Winning the US Open is one of golf's greatest achievements. Each June amateur and professional players
alike complete four days of 18-hole rounds of golf in the quest to win this event. In the over 100 years
of its existence, it has become a sort of "World Golf Championship". Horace Rawlins won the introductory
US Open on Rhode Island's Newport Golf and Country Club course in 1895. Then it was not as popular as it
is today. As a matter of fact, that first tournament was postponed because the more popular event, the
America's Cup yacht races, was scheduled at the same time. Since then the event has evolved in many ways
including format. US Open golf odds are offered on the US Open at Sportbet.com
MAMARONECK, N.Y. - Geoff Ogilvy never thought he would be the winner of the 106th U.S. Open. He was not alone in that thinking.
But a series of unlikely and improbable events over the closing holes led the 29-year-old Australian to the championship at Winged Foot Golf Club's West Course Sunday evening. He also became the first Australian to win the U.S. Open since David Graham in 1981, at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.
