Can American Pharaoh Win The Triple Crown?

Can American Pharaoh Win The Triple Crown?

American Pharoah sloshed his way to a 7 length victory in the 2015 Preakness Stakes and now has a chance to become only the twelfth Triple Crown winner in the history of the sport. American Pharoah’s trainer, Bob Baffert, has been here before. He failed at winning the Crown with Silver Charm in 1997. A year later he failed to win the Crown with Real Quiet after Real Quiet lost by a nose to Victory Gallop. In 2000, War Emblem stumbled leaving the gate and lost all chance at winning the Test of Champions.

But, Bob Baffert, and many horse racing enthusiasts, believe that this is his best chance at winning the Triple Crown. The other horses just weren’t of the same caliber as American Pharoah. The Eclipse Award winning two-year-old champion is undefeated save for a loss in his very first race, a maiden event at Santa Anita. He’s won over various conditions: wet tracks, dry tracks, and from various post-positions. He won from post-position 18 in the Kentucky Derby. He won from the rail in the Preakness Stakes.

American Pharoah looks like a Triple Crown winner. What’s most impressive is the fact that he was likely carrying close to 135 pounds when beating his competition in the Preakness. The rain that hit Baltimore right before the race sent water into the boots, into the saddle, into anywhere that it could get to, inflating the weight that every horse carried during the running of the Second Jewel in the Triple Crown. With all of the weight, American Pharoah still managed to run a 102 Beyer Speed Figure.

That’s amazingly impressive. As always in the Belmont, the key for American Pharoah’s dance with destiny will be the new shooters. Frosted, the fourth place finisher in the Kentucky Derby, and Materiality, the sixth place finisher, are both scheduled to run in the Belmont. Madefromlucky, who looked like a much improved horse when winning the Peter Pan, is also likely to be entered. Horse racing fans also shouldn’t discount the chances of Mubtaahij, the UAE Derby winner that finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby

Frosted, Materiality, Mubtaahij and Madefromlucky are legitimate challengers to American Pharoah’s quest for the Crown. But the horse has responded to anything thrown his way so far and the guess here is that he’ll find a way to beat the competition on June 6.

Early 2015 Belmont Stakes Betting Odds

  • Materiality 8/1
  • Conquest Curlinate 10/1
  • Keen ice 10/1
  • Madefromlucky 10/1
  • Mubtaahij 15/1

The Cleveland Cavs Will Cover the 6-point Spread If

The Cavs can match Golden State’s shooting prowess

Cleveland looked like the best team in the NBA when sweeping Atlanta in the Eastern Conference Finals, but was that enough to make them my NBA Finals game one free pick? Cleveland played a well balanced team that wasn’t void of the one-two knockout punch (Curry/Thompson) that they face in the NBA Finals starting June 4.

Golden State is ranked first in points per game at 110, first in field goal percentage at 47.8%, and first in three-point field goal percentage at 39.8%. When you play a team that hits 4 out of 10 three-pointers, the best way to counter that team is to score three-pointers on your own. Cleveland has the guy to do it with J.R. Smith who shoots 39.6% from behind the arc. When Smith isn’t shooting threes, Kyrie Irving, if he’s healthy enough, is going to have to. Irving shoots 41.5% from three. During the playoffs, Irving is shooting 48.1% from the three-point line. LeBron is going to have to set up Smith and Irving for the three-ball. If he does, the Cavs should cover the spread.

Cleveland Cavaliers’ Projected Starting Lineup:

  • LeBron James, SF 6′ 8, 26.5 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 7.8 APG
  • Timofey Mozgov, C 7′ 1?, 9.6 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 0.6 APG
  • Tristan Thompson, C 6′ 9?, 7.5 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 0.6 APG
  • Kyrie Irving, PG 6′ 3?, 20.9 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 3.5 APG
  • Iman Shumpert, SG 6′ 5?, 9.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 0.6 APG

Golden State Will Cover the 6-point Spread If

The Warriors play good enough perimeter defense

Golden State didn’t have the inside game that Houston had in the Western Conference Finals. But what Golden State did have was the ability to stop Houston’s shooters from dropping too many perimeter shots. Will that be enough to make the Warriors my NBA Finals game one free pick?

Even though the Warriors gave up size on the inside, they were able to hold Houston’s shooters to less than stellar games. James Harden went 2 out of 11 from the field and was 0 and 3 from behind the three-point line in Golden State’s 104 to 90 Game 5 win over the Rockets. Golden State needs to guard the perimeter against Cleveland because the Warriors shoot the three so well that if they are able to do that, whatever advantage that Cleveland has inside won’t matter. That’s the best way for Steph Curry and the Warriors to cover the spread in Game 1. They have to be able to hold Cleveland to a low percentage from the perimeter.

Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers Game 7 Free Pick

Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers Game 7 Free Pick

The New York Rangers are a stunning 7-0 all-time in Game Seven’s on home ice at Madison Square Garden and tonight they host the Tampa Bay Lighting in hopes of taking the Eastern Conference Finals with a victory. The Rangers are oozing confidence and experience and playing in-front the ruckus New York crowd alone is enough to make most opponents wet their jocks.

Tampa Bay’s response: Bring it.

“The past and the records and everything are great, but they’re kind of irrelevant in a way,” Lightning center Tyler Johnson said. “It’s a game. It’s 60 minutes of whatever team wants to win it more. The start of the game, it starts at 0-0. So it really doesn’t matter what you did in the past. It doesn’t matter what we did in the past. It’s game on when that puck drops.”

The Lightning is seeking their first Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 2004. So far this year they have eliminated the Detroit Red Wings in seven games, the Montreal Canadiens in six and now they are one victory away from another trip to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Tampa Bay is averaging 2.7 goals per game in the postseason, a lower number than the 3.2 they averaged in the regular season when they led all teams in the NHL. Center Tyler Johnson leads the team with 12 postseason goals and eight assists, followed by Right winger Nikita Kucherov with nine goals, and 10 assists and center Steven Stamkos has the most shots on goal with 52, along seven goals and 10 assists. On defense, Tampa Bay is allowing 2.8 goals per game in the playoffs, including three losses where they allowed at least five goals in each. Goalie Ben Bishop has allowed 42 goals on 503 shots against and backup Andrei Vasilevskiy four goals on 33 shots.

"The one thing is it’s the seventh game and I don’t think there’s any secrets between the two teams anymore," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said Wednesday. "It’s just going to be one of those games where it’s strap `em up and play and let’s see who comes out on top."

This year after the Rangers won the President’s Trophy as the regular season’s top team and have continued their winning ways in hopes of their first Stanley Cup since 1994 (they lost the Cup to the Los Angeles Kings in five games last year).

En route to this Eastern Conference finals game 7, they took care of the Pittsburgh Penguins in five games and the Washington Capitals in seven. New York has scored 2.5 goals per game in the playoffs, short to the 3.0 they averaged in the regular season, and they are led by Center Derick Brassard, who has nine goals and seven assists, and left winger Rick Nash with five goals and nine assists. The team is allowing 2.1 goals per game and goalie Henrik Lundqvist has given up 39 goals on 545 shots against.

"It’s a lot of fun," Rangers Rick Nash said. "You obviously want to win the series in four, but when it comes down to a Game 7, I feel like these are things that you dream about, and you pretend you’re playing hockey on the ice by yourself or road hockey when you were a kid. It’s just one of those experiences that’s tough to put into words."

Tampa Bay is 6-2 SU in its last eight games on the road. The total has gone UNDER in 11 of Tampa Bay’s last 16 games on the road, but OVER in 4 of Tampa Bay’s last five games when playing NY Rangers.

The NY Rangers are 17-8 SU in their last 25 games, 4-2 SU in their last 6 games at home, 3-7 SU in their last 10 games when playing Tampa Bay, 1-5 SU in their last 6 games when playing at home against Tampa Bay, but 15-3 in elimination games since 2012 and 7-0 all-time when playing at home in Game 7s.
