2017 Belmont Stakes Morning Line Odds & Picks

2017 Belmont Stakes Morning Line Odds & Picks

Three weeks ago, trainer Todd Pletcher was at the top of the racing world. His Kentucky Derby winner, Always Dreaming, had been so impressive at Churchill Downs, that he was going off at 6/5 to win the Preakness Stakes.

What: 2017 Belmont Stakes
When: June 10, 2017
Start Time: 6:48 PM ET
Where: Elmont, New York
Track: Belmont Park
Watch: NBC
Stream: NBC Sports Live

Then, Pletcher’s world crashed. Always Dreaming finished at the back of the pack. No worries. Team Pletcher will show up at Belmont Park on June 10 with the value play in tow, Tapwrit. Also, check out my smart and dark horse plays for this Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.

The Odds On Favorite To Win The 2017 Belmont Stakes:  Irish War Cry 7/2

The son of Curlin should go off the favorite. Classic Empire’s defection not only means that Irish War Cry is the second most accomplished horse in the field, it also means that Irish War Cry won’t end up chasing a crazy fast pace. He’s definitely worth using in all exotics because if the good Irish War Cry shows up, the one that won the Wood Memorial, it’s going to be had for any horse to beat him.

The Smart Pick To Win The Belmont Stakes:  Epicharis 4/1

There are so many reasons to love this Japanese-bred grandson of dual classic winner Sunday Silence. First, the Japanese skipped the Kentucky Derby to run in this race. Second, he’s been hanging out at Belmont Park for a while, meaning that he’s acclimated. Third, the only jockey he’s ever known, Christophe Lemaire, rides on Saturday. Don’t be surprised if Epicharis goes off the favorite in off-shore books like William Hill and Ladbrokes. European horseplayers are going to be all over this guy.

The Value Pick To Win The 2017 Belmont Stakes: Tapwrit 6/1

His form went south big time in the Bluegrass Stakes and the Kentucky Derby. I think part of the problem is that they tried to rate him off the pace in the Bluegrass, the race that Irap won on the lead. He wants to be closer to the lead than what he showed in the Bluegrass. No horse in the Derby that didn’t race on the rail had a shot. Todd Pletcher has had success bringing Derby horses to the Belmont after skipping the Preakness. There are plenty of signs pointing to Tapwrit winning at overlay odds on June 10.

The Dark Horse Pick To Win The 2017 Belmont Stakes: Multiplier 15/1

His sixth-place finish in the Preakness Stakes wasn’t all that bad. Jockey Joel Rosario, who rides him in the Belmont, took him up the rail, angled him out for a clear run, and then ended up steadying him. I’m not saying he would have caught Cloud Computing or Classic Empire. I am saying that he might have gotten up for third if not for the bad trip. Three-year-olds can improve in a matter of weeks. If Multiplier improves, he could shock the world by winning the Belmont Stakes.
