The British Open Championship, now called The Open Championship, was first established in 1860.This year is going to have it's 141st edition of event this July 19th, 2012. This tournament is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf. It is the only "major" held outside the USA and is administered by the R&A, which is the governing body of golf outside the USA and Mexico.
The British Open is the third one played during the calendar year. The US Masters takes place in April, the US Open in June and the PGA Championship takes place in August.

The British Open, known officially as simply “the Open Championship”, is one of the four “major” annual golf tournaments. Some of the most notable winners of the British Open include Bobby Jones - the last amateur to win, Harry Vardon, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Tiger Woods just to name a few. St. George was the first venue to host The Open, the last Open tournament was in 2003 and before that 1993.
Royal Lytham & St Annes are looking forward to hosting this event on July 19th-22nd, 2012.
International Final Qualifying (IFQ) events for The Open Championship were introduced in 2004 and are held on five continents to give more players from around the world the chance to gain direct entry into golf’s oldest championship.
