This year the US Open will the played at the Opympic Club in San Francisco California. This Club was found on May 6, 1860, it started with 23 members among the member were Arthur and Charles Christian Nahl, Mark Twain, William Randolph Hearsy, Charles Crocker, Leland Standford, James G. Fair and John Mackay and "Gentleman Jim" Corbett, winner of the world heavyweight title in 1892. The first US Open that was hosted in the venue was in 1955, the winner then was Jack Fleck who was an unknown player from Iowa he won in a playoff with Ben Hogan. Today the club is very different from its original and the 23 members, now it has more than 5000 members competing in 19 sports, two clubhouses and 45 holes of golf.
The U.S. Open is open to any professional, or to any amateur with an up-to-date USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 1.4. Players (male or female) may obtain a place by being fully exempt or by competing successfully in qualifying. The field is 156 players.
US Open Golf History
The U.S. Open golf championship, first played in 1895, was originally played concurrently with the U.S. Amateur Open, but both were postponed because of the America's Cup, which was to occur at the same time. Both were scheduled in Newport, Rhode Island, but the Americas Cup, a yacht race, was more popular at the time and so the U.S. Open had to be delayed.
All 36 holes of the US Open were originally played in one day. That changed in 1898 when the USGA changed it to a two day event, with 36 holes on each day, for a total of 72 holes. It changed again in 1926, with 18 holes each day on the first two days, and 36 on the third. Since 1965, the U.S. Open has played with 18 holes per round, for four days.
