Torrey Pines Golf Course will host the 2008 US Open. Torrey Pines is located in La Jolla, CA and is
known as one of the most beautiful places to experience golf. Torrey Pines Golf Course sits on a cliff
that towers over the Pacific Ocean, and just minutes from San Diego making this golf course a perfect
place for the US Open in 2008.
San Diego is expected to roll-out the red carpet to accommodate the 40,000 or more fans that are
expected to attend each day. Although San Diego has Super Bowl hosting experience, event organizers
and city officials predict the U.S. OPEN at Torrey Pines will out perform past Super Bowls as the most
economically profitable sporting event ever hosted by the City of San Diego. This high profile golf event

The U.S. Open is open to any professional, or to any amateur with an up-to-date USGA Handicap Index not
exceeding 1.4. Players (male or female) may obtain a place by being fully exempt or by competing
successfully in qualifying. The field is 156 players.
US Open Golf History
The U.S. Open golf championship, first played in 1895, was originally played concurrently with the
U.S. Amateur Open, but both were postponed because of the America's Cup, which was to occur at the
same time. Both were scheduled in Newport, Rhode Island, but the Americas Cup, a yacht race, was more
popular at the time and so the U.S. Open had to be delayed. This year's events begin on June 10, 2008
and will be held at Torry Pines in beautiful La Jolla, California. Though tickets are notoriously hard

All 36 holes of the US Open were originally played in one day. That changed in 1898 when the USGA changed
it to a two day event, with 36 holes on each day, for a total of 72 holes. It changed again in 1926,
with 18 holes each day on the first two days, and 36 on the third. Since 1965, the U.S. Open has played
with 18 holes per round, for four days.
