MLB Best Bets June 19 – 25

Summer is in full bloom. The NBA and NHL seasons are in the rear-view mirror and football is still over two months away. Until then use my top MLB picks to cash in big.

Can Yu Darvish shut down the highest-scoring offense in MLB? Darvish and the Texas Rangers battle the Yankees and Aaron Judge this Friday. On Saturday, I can’t wait for the pitchers’ duel between Jon Lester and Edinson Volquez.  Minnesota sends ace Ervin Santana to the mound versus Cleveland on Sunday. Will Santana shut down the Tribe’s offense? Or, will Josh Tomlin come up big on the mound against the Twins?

MLB Best Bets June 19 – 25

Texas at NY Yankees
When:  Friday, June 23 at 7:05 pm ET
Where: Texas Stadium, Bronx, NY
Listed Pitchers: TEX-Yu Darvish, NYY-Masahiro Tanaka

Analysis: Masahiro Tanaka hasn’t had a great 2017. After 76.2 innings, Tanaka’s ERA is 6.34. He has a 5-7 record, and a 1.59 WHIP. One thing that is decent is his 76 strikeouts. That’s a strikeout an inning.

Versus Texas, Tanaka’s never pitched well. The Rangers have a ridiculous .419 batting average versus Tanaka. Texas has 26 hits from 62 at-bats. 3 of the hits have gone for home runs.

Texas’s Yu Darvish has become the Rangers’ ace. Darvish has a 3.34 ERA to go along with a 1.13 WHIP. He’s struck out 99 batters in 94 innings pitched. All those numbers are good.

The Yankees have 12 hits from 42 at-bats vs. Darvish. He should make some adjustments versus New York for this Friday match-up. I like the Rangers to get it done.

Pick: Texas moneyline

Chicago Cubs at Miami
When:  Saturday, June 24 at 4:10 pm ET
Where: Marlins Park, Miami, FL
Listed Pitchers: CHC-Jon Lester, MIA-Edinson Volquez

Analysis: Jon Lester’s 4-4 record and 3.89 ERA aren’t great. But, there have been times when he’s pitched lights out. In his last start, versus the Mets on June 13, Lester threw for 7 innings, allowed a single run off 5 hits, and struck out 10.

The Marlins hit well against Lester. As a team, Miami has a .350 batting average. The average is legitimate. Miami’s faced Lester 117 times. They’ve gotten 41 hits with 6 of the hits being home runs.
Volquez threw a no-hitter versus Arizona on June 3. In his very next game, he threw a 3 hitter without allowing a single earned run. But, versus Oakland, Volquez lasted only 4 innings. He allowed the A’s to get 5 earned runs in total, and 4 earned runs off only 4 hits.

Which Volquez shows up on Saturday? I believe the lockdown Edinson shows up. The Cubs bat .212 versus Volquez. They have 21 hits in 99 at-bats.

I’m confident in the Marlins. I believe they beat the Cubs by at least 2 runs.

Pick: Miami run line

Minnesota at Cleveland
When:  Sunday, June 25 at 1:10 pm ET
Where: Progressive Field, Cleveland, OH
TV: ESPN
Listed Pitchers: MIN-Ervin Santana, CLE-Josh Tomlin

Analysis: Tomlin has been up and down all-season long. Things won’t get easy for Tomlin this week. On June 20, he battles Baltimore. Then, on Sunday he takes on the Twins. The Twins have schooled Tomlin in the past. Minnesota has a .285 batting average versus the Tribe’s scheduled starter this Sunday.

That’s bad news for Cleveland because Ervin Santana holds the Tribe to a .219 batting average. Cleveland should have some trouble in this game.

Pick: Minnesota moneyline
