MLB Top Plays July 17-23

The All-Star break is behind us as we face the second half of the 2017 MLB season. Use my top MLB picks for this week to cash in.

Can Mets’ ace Jacob deGrom shut down the St. Louis Cardinals at home on Citi Field? Then, I turn my attention to a fantastic Saturday matchup between Texas and Tampa Bay. Can Chris Archer shut down Texas’s talented batting line-up? Sunday’s game has the still hot Houston Astros traveling to Baltimore. Will Lance McCullers keep the Stros playing their best?

MLB Top Plays July 17-23

St. Louis at NY Mets
When:  Wednesday, July 19 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Citi Field, New York, NY
TV:  ESPN
Listed Pitchers: STL-Mike Leake vs NYM-Jacob deGrom

Analysis: Although Mike Leake’s overall stats continue to impress, there’s been moments when he’s flat out fallen apart. On July 5, he lasted only 3.2 innings after allowing 3 home runs. Miami beat the Cardinals 9 to 6.

deGrom has been one of the bright spots for the New York Mets this season. NYM’s ace has a fantastic 10-3 record. But, deGrom might have an issue in this game. The Cardinals bat .328 versus Jacob.

St. Louis hit 4 home runs off deGrom the last time they faced him. They still managed to lose 5 to 6. deGrom’s home ERA is 2.37. It’s difficult to see St. Louis winning this one. I’ll side with the Mets on the run line.

Pick: New York Mets run line

Texas at Tampa Bay
When:  Saturday, July 22 at 1:35 pm ET
Where: Tropicana Field, St.  Petersburg, FL
TV:  FS1
Listed Pitchers: TEX-Andrew Cashner vs TB-Chris Archer

Analysis: Cashner’s ERA of 3.48 isn’t nearly as bad as I thought it was. Cashner’s biggest issue is that he follows up great games with terrible performances. Yep, you guessed it. The last time Cashner started a game, he was brilliant. He gave up 2 earned runs and 3 hits.  The last time Cashner pitched that well, he followed it up with a terrible performance where he allowed 4 earned runs off 10 hits in 5 innings.

Archer holds Texas to a .200 batting average. He should pitch well enough for Tampa to take this game on Saturday.

Pick:  Tampa Bay moneyline

Houston at Baltimore
When:  Sunday, July 23 at 1:35 pm ET
Where: Camden Yards, Baltimore, MD
TV: TBS
Listed Pitchers: HOU-Lance McCuller Jr. vs BAL-Dylan Bundy

Analysis: This should be one of the easiest wagers of the week. Baltimore doesn’t have much shot versus Houston. Lance McCullers Jr. has a great ERA. It’s 3.05. McCullers Jr. also has a sweet 7-2 record.

Dylan Bundy has a 4.33 ERA. Houston’s only faced Bundy 15 times. They should have success versus Bundy on Sunday. I believe the Stros beat Baltimore by at least 2 runs.

Pick:  Houston run line
