2017 NCAA Basketball Title Picks

This week, the madness begins! 64 teams start their quests for the College Basketball National Championship.

The four top seeds have been set: Villanova, North Carolina, Kansas, and Gonzaga. Which if any of those four top-seeded college basketball teams have the juice to cut down the nets at this year’s Final Four?

The Odds-On Betting Favorite To Win The 2017 NCAA Basketball Title: Duke/North Carolina +600

Wouldn’t you know it? The two most storied teams in the ACC are also co-favorites to win the NCAA Basketball Title. Duke won the ACC Tournament. North Carolina won the ACC Regular Season. Duke got a nice draw with the second seed in the East Region while North Carolina got the 1-seed in the South Region.

Both teams have a shot to cut down the nets. Duke came on in the ACC Tournament, but I still question if they have enough to win 6 straight games in the NCAA Tournament. North Carolina showed their biggest issue in their last game, a loss to Duke. If Joel Berry II can’t play, if he gets into foul trouble, or gets hurt, the Heels are toast. Both are tough bets at the odds.

The Smart Pick To Win The 2017 NCAA Basketball Title: Villanova+750

I believe the defending champs have been the most consistent team this season. Led by player of the year Josh Hart, Villanova has the experience to win the East and then win the NCAA Championship. They also have the coach in Jay Wright. As always, Nova goes into the tournament playing excellent defense. It’s hard to see Villanova not playing its way to at least the Elite Eight in the East.

The Value Pick To Win The 2017 NCAA Basketball Title: Arizona +1200

The Wildcats blitzed UCLA and Oregon on its way to winning the Pac 12 Tournament. The Wildcats are young. But, the Wildcats have two great players that can play inside or outside in Alonzo Trier and Lauri Markkanen. Markkanen is a freshman from Finland who is a finalist for the 2017 Wooden Award. Trier’s first game this season was on Jan. 21.

Markkanen’s ability to shoot the 3-pointer as well as to post up inside makes him impossible to guard. Trier should have his legs underneath him since he didn’t start playing until a couple of months ago. Watch out for the Wildcats.

The Longshot Pick To Win The 2017 NCAA Basketball Title: SMU +3300

SMU doesn’t go that deep. They play a starting five and a sixth man. Maybe, that’s why the Mustangs fell out of favor with the Selection Committee on Sunday. They just don’t believe SMU is as good as their record indicates.

What’s the Mustang’s record? How about 30 and 4? Ah, but they’ve probably fallen off the winning wagon, right?  Nope. The Mustangs have lost 1 game since Nov. 30, 2016. The game they lost was on Jan. 21 to Cincinnati. Since the 2-point loss, SMU has beaten Cincinnati twice. The Mustangs are for real.
