NHL Free Picks March 19 – 26

For my NHL picks between March 19 and March 26, I’ve chosen two Sunday games and one Wednesday game. On Wednesday, the NY Rangers host the NY Islanders in one of the great rivalries in NHL. Can the Rangers come out on top without their future hall of fame goalie? Then, on Sunday, Minnesota battles Detroit in the early afternoon. Can Minnesota keep pace in the Central Division by beating the Red Wings? Also on Sunday is a game between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Who wins between those two Eastern Conference teams?

NHL Free Picks March 19 – 26

NY Islanders at NY Rangers
When:  Wednesday, March 22 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
TV: NBCSN

Analysis: The Rangers will be without terrific goalie Henrik Lundqvist when they take on the rival Islanders on March 22. Lundqvist is out for at least another week. Will it matter?

Heck, yeah, it’s going to matter! The Islanders beat the Rangers 4 to 2 with Lundqvist in goal. It should be tougher for the Islanders to put up that many goals versus New York’s current starter in goal, Aanti Raanta.

Raanta was terrific in the Rangers last, a 3 to 2 win over Minnesota. He made 25 saves from 27 shots. I think the Rangers start Raanta in this game. I think he plays well. NYR gets a measure of revenge over the Islanders this Wednesday.

Pick: NY Rangers

Minnesota at Detroit
When:  Sunday, March 26 at 12:30 pm ET
Where: Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, MI
TV: NBC

Analysis: Minnesota last faced Detroit on Feb. 12. The Wild were terrific in that game. They dominated the Red Wings when winning 6 to 3.

But, Minnesota goes into this week off 4 straight losses. The Wild has lost 6 out of their last 7. That’s a problem. Is Detroit good enough to take advantage of Minnesota’s issues in this nationally televised game on Sunday?

I don’t think so. Detroit is the worst team in the Atlantic Division. As of March 19, the Red Wings are 28-31-11-0. The Red Wings don’t have much shot versus the Wild in this.

If the Wild don’t win this one, I will eat my hat.

Pick: Minnesota

Philadelphia at Pittsburgh
When:  Sunday, March 26 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, PA
TV: NBCSN

Analysis: The last time the Flyers battled the Pens they were excellent. The game wasn’t that long ago on March 4. Philly beat Pittsburgh 4 to 0.

Although Pitt gets a chance to gain revenge against Philly by playing them at home, I like the Flyers in this game. Philadelphia had lost 3 in a row and 4 of their last 5 before beating the Pens on March 15.

It was such a devastating win that I’ve got to take the odds on Philly to repeat it on March 26. Sure, Philly battles Pitt in their fifth game this week and after their fourth straight road game. But, the odds should be good enough for me to take a shot.

Pick: Philadelphia
