Breaking Down The 2015 Florida State Seminoles

If Florida State fans were disappointed last season after losing 59 to 20 to Oregon in the College Football Playoff, how do they feel about this season? Florida State hasn’t played a single snap and already 2 of their players, including top running back Dalvin Cook, have been kicked off of the team. It looks like Jimbo Fisher isn’t in charge at Florida State any more. Fisher not only has to deal with discipline issues already this season, but there have been massive changes on both his offense and defense.

The NCAA Football oddsmakers have listed the Florida State Seminoles at 18/1 to win the 2015-16 FBS Championship and 5/2 to win the ACC.

Key Players Lost To The 2015 NFL Draft:

  • QB Jameis Winston (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
  • WR Rashad Greene (Jacksonville Jaguars)
  • DT Eddie Goldman (Chicago Bears)
  • DE Mario Edwards Jr (Oakland Raiders)
  • C Cameron Erving (Cleveland Browns)
  • OT Bobby Hart (NY Giants)
  • G Tre' Jackson (New England Patriots)
  • CB P.J. Williams (New Orleans Saints)
  • CB Ronald Darby (Buffalo Bills)
  • RB Karlos Williams (Buffalo Bills)
  • TE Nick O'Leary (Buffalo Bills)

2015 Florida State Offense:

The offense is going to look much different than the one that QB Jameis Winston led for the past 2 seasons. Gone are Winston, WR Rashad Greene, and TE Nick O’Leary. That’s not the worst part, though. The worst part is that Florida State’s offense lost 4 starters from the offensive line.

The QB should be Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson. Although Golson hasn’t been declared the starter, it’s hard to imagine that he’d transfer away from Notre Dame to Florida State without getting some sort of guarantee of starting. Golson is a senior. He needs to start this season, or his transferring would have been a waste. The problem with Golson is that he’s a turnover machine. He threw 14 picks last season playing in Brian Kelly’s system. He also fumbled the ball 8 times. That’s a stunning 22 turnovers. If Golson doesn’t start, Sean Maguire will. Maguire is just okay. Now that Dalvin Cook is suspended, who knows who will run the football behind the new offensive line.

2015 Florida State Defense:

The line is deep, but that doesn’t exactly mean that it’s going to shut down offenses. Nile Lawrence-Stample returns but he returns after an injury. The linebackers, especially Reggie Northrup, can be very good, but like Lawrence-Stample, Northrup and Terrance Smith are coming back from injuries. Jalen Ramsey at cornerback will be the star of the defense. If the D-Line doesn’t gel, he’ll have his number called probably more than he wants it being called on most Saturdays. The defense will appear solid because there aren’t a lot of great offenses in the ACC. Florida State will most likely have to win with its defense this season because of the new offensive line and Golson and Maguire’s huge downgrade from Winston at the QB position.

FSU Seminoles Betting Outlook:

Florida State’s fall from grace could be swift. They didn’t just lose their quarterback when Winston fled to the NFL. They lost their on the field leader. Without Winston, this team has no direction. It’s obvious that Fisher has no control over his team. Add in the fact that the defense may or may not be all that good and neither Maguire nor Golson looks like the answer at QB behind a new offensive line and all of a sudden a 9 and 3 record is probably the best to expect from the Seminoles.
