NHL Expert Picks Oct 23-29

2017 Stanley Cup Odds & Picks

The 2017 NHL Playoffs are set. Chicago and Washington are the favorites. But, as is always the case in the National Hockey League, smart plays and value plays are abundant. Who do I like as my smart play this year? What about my value play? Is there a long shot that deserves some love this season?

2017 Stanley Cup Odds & Picks

  • Washington Capitals +445
  • Chicago Blackhawks +445
  • Pittsburgh Penguins +845
  • Minnesota Wild +870
  • Columbus Blue Jackets +995
  • Montreal Canadiens +1225
  • San Jose Sharks +1300
  • Anaheim Ducks +1475
  • NY Rangers +1475
  • Edmonton Oilers +1775
  • Calgary Flames +2350
  • Nashville Predators +2350
  • Boston Bruins +2650
  • Ottawa Senators +2850
  • St. Louis Blues +3050
  • Toronto Maple Leafs +3050

The Odds-On Favorite To Win The 2017 Stanley Cup: Chicago Blackhawks, Washington Capitals, +445

The Blackhawks and Capitals started the season out as Stanley Cup favorites. After the entire regular season, they remain Stanley Cup favorites. Chicago more than Washington figures to garner much love in Vegas.

But, the Blackhawks have a dicey first series against the tough Nashville Predators. If they beat the Preds, they battle either the Blues or Wild in Round 2. It’s not setting up as Chicago’s year.

Washington could have some trouble as well. The Caps play the young, eager, Toronto Maple Leafs in Round 1. If they could get through Round 1, they’d most likely battle Pittsburgh in Round 2. Pittsburgh beat Washington in last season’s playoffs.

Both the Caps and the Blackhawks are underlays to win the Stanley Cup at less than +500 odds.

The Smart Pick To Win The 2017 Stanley Cup: Montreal Canadians, +1225

The Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Columbus Blue Jackets are all in the same bracket. Two of those teams should lose before Montreal faces the winner in the finals to get to the Stanley Cup.

That’s good news for Montreal fans. The Canadians started out this season as the hottest in NHL. They’ve cooled down since then. They’re still one of the likeliest winners of the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs. With a home record of 24-12-4-1 and a road record of 23-14-3-1, Montreal figures to put in a top run to Lord Stanley’s Cup.

The Value Bet To Win The 2017 Stanley Cup: San Jose Sharks +1300

Last season’s Stanley Cup participant from the Western Conference could easily be this season’s Stanley Cup participants. The Sharks battle Edmonton and then Calgary or Anaheim before facing off against one of the top Central Division teams in the Western Conference Finals.

I think San Jose has been playing possum during the regular season. Sharks coach Peter DeBoer knows how to get his team ready for the NHL Playoffs. I like the Sharks at the odds.

The Longshot Pick To Win The 2017 Stanley Cup: St. Louis Blues +3050

The St. Louis Blues offer the most upside as a long shot. If the Blues can get by Minnesota in Round 1, they could upset Chicago in Round 2. After all, St. Louis beat Chicago in the playoffs last season. Then, it’s a battle versus one of the Pacific teams, none of which have a decided advantage over St. Louis.

I can’t look past St. Louis getting it done in the parity pro league at over 30 to 1 odds.

NBA Best Bets Last Week Of The Season

NBA Best Bets Last Week Of The Season

It’s the final week of the 2017 NBA Regular Season. All three games that I’ve chosen for my picks this week happen on Wednesday, April 12. Will Atlanta or Indiana knock the other out of the Eastern Conference Playoffs on Wednesday? What’s going to happen when San Antonio, at full strength, takes on Utah in Salta Lake City? Finally, who wins when New Orleans heads to Portland to battle the Trailblazers?

NBA Best Bets Last Week Of The Season

Atlanta at Indiana
When:  Wednesday, April 12 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, IN

Analysis: As of April 8, Indiana has a 40 and 40 record. The Pacers, if the playoffs started today, would be the 7-seed in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta has a 41 and 38 record. The Hawks are a game and a half ahead of the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Playoff race.

Atlanta has secured a spot in the playoffs no matter what. Indiana? The Pacers must win to ensure they don’t lose out to Miami, who is only a game behind Indiana as of April 8. That gives me hope that Indiana comes out strong in this battle.

I think Paul George is underrated as an NBA Player. He’s as good as any small forward in the league not named LeBron. I think George leads the Pacers to a win against the spread.

Pick: Indiana ATS

San Antonio at Utah
When:  Wednesday, April 12 at 9:00 pm ET
Where: Vivint Smart Home Arena, Salt Lake City, UT

Analysis: I don’t have any issues with Utah. The Jazz are a decent team. They could really do some damage in the Western Conference Playoffs. Versus the Spurs on Wednesday, though, Utah could be in some trouble.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich was thoroughly embarrassed by San Antonio’s 87 to 98 loss to the L.A. Clippers on April 8. Afterwards, Pop said that nobody on the Spurs was going to get rest in the final week of the regular season.

At full strength, there are few teams in the NBA that can beat San Antonio. I don’t see Utah beating the Spurs on Wednesday if Pop sticks to his word and starts LaMarcus Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard.

Pick: San Antonio ATS

New Orleans at Portland
When:  Wednesday, April 12 at 10:30 pm ET
Where: Moda Center, Portland, OR

Analysis:  Portland, like Indiana in the Eastern Conference, is 40 and 40 as of April 8. The Trailblazers are 1.5 games ahead of Denver for the 8-seed in the Western Conference Playoffs.

New Orleans could shut down Anthony Davis or DeMarcus Cousins this week. The Pelicans might shut down both players for the final game of the regular season now that New Orleans has been eliminated from playoff contention.

I don’t see the Blazers losing this game. On April 12, they should win easily while covering the spread.

Pick: Portland ATS

MLB Best Bets April 10-16

MLB Best Bets April 10-16

On Wednesday, two of the top teams in the NL, the L.A. Dodgers and Chicago Cubs, throw down. Who wins when the Dodgers head to Wrigley Field? St. Louis battles the New York Yankees in a fantastic interleague matchup this weekend. On Saturday, will the Cardinals take it to the Yankees in the Bronx? Then, on Sunday, who wins at Yankee Stadium when St. Louis puts former Cy Young Award winner Adam Wainwright on the mound?

MLB Best Bets April 10th-16th

L.A. Dodgers at Chicago Cubs
When:  Wednesday, April 12 at 8:05 pm ET
Where: Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL
Listed Pitchers: LAD-Brandon McCarthy vs CHC-John Lackey

Analysis: The L.A. Dodgers start Brandon McCarthy this Wednesday. In his first outing of the year, McCarthy wasn’t bad. He gave up 2 home runs and 4 hits in 6 innings. McCarthy’s ERA came out to 3.00.

The Dodgers beat San Diego 10 to 2. But, the win was against the San Diego Padres. The Chicago Cubs are a much better team than San Diego. In 32 at-bats versus McCarthy, the Cubs have 10 hits. Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist have hit home runs against McCarthy. The ERA is .313.

Cubs’ listed starter John Lackey has held the Dodgers to 20 hits from 89 at-bats. More importantly, he hasn’t yielded a single home run. I think Chicago wins by at least 2.

Pick: Chicago Cubs run line

St. Louis at NY Yankees
When:  Saturday, April 15 at 1:05 pm ET
Where: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
Listed Pitchers: STL-Carolos Martinez vs NYY-Michael Pineda

Analysis: St. Louis pitcher Carlos Martinez was terrific versus the Cubs on April 2. He pitched 7.1 innings, gave up 6 hits, struck out 10, and gave up 0 runs. He also didn’t walk a single Cubs’ batter.
Unfortunately, Martinez imploded on April 9 versus the Cincinnati Reds. He gave up 5 earned runs off 6 hits in only 5 innings. Which Martinez is going to show up this Saturday?

I think the good Martinez shows up. Starlin Castro, who has seen Martinez more than any other Yankee batter, has 1 hit from 11 at-bats. I don’t see how the other Yankees touch Martinez.

Yankees listed starter Michael Pineda got drilled in his start on Wednesday, April 5. Pineda allowed a ridiculous 4 runs in only 3.2 innings of work versus the Tampa Bay Rays. His ERA came out to 9.82.

The Cards haven’t seen Pineda a lot. But, he was so bad on April 5 that it’s hard for me to see him stepping it up this Saturday against St. Louis. I like the Cardinals on the moneyline.

Pick: St. Louis

St. Louis at NY Yankees
When:  Sunday, April 18 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
Listed Pitchers: STL-Adam Wainwright vs NYY-Jordan Montgomery

Analysis: Sure, Adam Wainwright is 0-1 so far this season. But, if you are a St. Louis Cardinals’ fan, you must love how he pitched versus the Chicago Cubs on April 4.

Wainwright was terrific when allowing only 2 runs from 3 hits and walking only 2 in 5 innings against the defending champions. Why do I use the word terrific? Because there was some doubt that Wainwright would ever be good again.

I think he builds upon that start. His teammates should have no trouble picking up runs versus rookie Jordan Montgomery, who’s listed to start for the Yankees on Sunday.

I am betting St. Louis to take the ESPN broadcast game on April 18.

Pick: St. Louis
