College Basketball Expert Picks Jan 8-14th

With top-ranked teams all falling like flies over the last week, now is the perfect time for some expert assistance with this week’s upcoming slate of college hoops action. I’ve got a trio of expert college goops picks on three games that all feature nationally-ranked championship hopefuls starting with a pair of intriguing Wednesday night matchups. Now, let’s get to them.

2018 College Basketball Expert Picks Jan 8-14th

No. 10 Xavier (15-2) at No. 1 Villanova (14-1)
When: Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 8:00 PM ET
Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Philadelphia, PA

Analysis: Villanova bounced back from their only loss of the season against Butler to beat Marquette 100-90 on Saturday. Point guard Jalen Brunson had 27 points and eight assists to lead six players in double-digit scoring in the win. Villanova is back to being the No. 1 team in the AP national rankings this week with a bunch of top teams falling this past week, including previously No. 1 ranked Michigan State. No. 10 Xavier had their 10-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt by falling to Providence 81-72 on Saturday as star point guard Trevon Bluiett went scoreless in the second half.

For this Wednesday night matchup, I like Villanova to hold it down at home in the City of Brotherly Love just because they’re way deeper than Xavier. Just two players average double figures for the Musketeers while five players average double digits for Villanova.

Pick: Villanova 83 Xavier 75

Louisville at No. 24 Florida State
When: Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 9:00 PM ET
Where: Donald L. Tucker Center, Tallahassee, FL

Analysis: Louisville has lost two of its last three, including their heartbreaking 74-69 overtime road loss to No. 25 Clemson on Saturday. No. 24 Florida State ended up on the wrong end of an 80-74 loss against ACC rival, No. 15 Miami on Sunday. The Seminoles closed the gap on a 16-point second half deficit with a late rally to cut the lead to four points with 24 seconds remaining, but they couldn’t finish after digging themselves into a big hole. Florida State shot a season-low 36 percent in the loss against a Miami defense that is ranked second nationally in scoring defense.

For this Wednesday night ACC clash, I like Florida State to get back in the win column by taking out the Cardinals by at least six points. Florida State is averaging just over 84 points per game while Louisville puts up just over 76 per contest and only three points separate the two defensively.

Pick: Florida State 77 Louisville 71

Oregon (11-5) at No. 11 Arizona State (13-2)
When: Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 10:00 PM ET
Where” Wells Fargo Arena, Tempe, AZ

Analysis: Oregon has lost two of its last three games including their 76-64 road loss to Oregon State on Friday night. Oregon State shot 53 percent compared to 36 percent for Oregon and outrebounded the Ducks 43-36. Paul White came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points while adding six rebounds and five assists for Oregon while Victor Bailey Jr. scored 11 points, for the Ducks. Still, it wasn’t nearly enough. Arizona State beat Utah 80-77 on Sunday to snap a two-game skid. Shannon Evans scored 22 points to help Arizona State hold on to what could best be described as an ‘ugly’ win. For this Thursday night Pac-12 pairing, I’m going to advise you to back Arizona State to get the win by approximately five points. The Sun Devils are a perfect 8-0 at home this season and simply have more offensive firepower than the Ducks this season.

Pick: Arizona State 81 Oregon 76

NBA Expert Picks Jan 8-14th

NBA Expert Picks Jan 8-14th

With the 2017-18 NBA regular season moving further into the new year and teams in both conference looking to put the pedal to the metal as the annual all-star break approaches, it’s time for another round of expert NBA picks.

NBA Expert Picks Jan 8-14th

I’ve got a trio of picks that all look like virtual locks from my perspective. Now, let’s find out where the value in this week’s NBA schedule lies!

L.A. Clippers (17-21) at Golden State (32-8)
When: Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 9:30 PM ET
Where: Oracle Arena, Oakland, CA

Analysis: The Clippers hit the new week having gone 4-6 over their last 10 while losing two straight games including a 121-105 ass-whipping against the Warriors on Saturday as Steph Curry scored 45 points in just three-quarters of action. The Dubs have won eight of their last 10 and four straight heading into the new week. Clippers head coach Doc Rivers can talk all the junk he wants about “having 90 points of offense sitting in street clothes” but the fact of the matter is that the warriors completely own the Clippers and everyone knows it! If you can get the warriors at less than a dozen point favorite, I say, go for it. Curry and the Warriors will beat the Clippers by 15 in this one!

Pick: Warriors 120 Clippers 105

Boston (33-10) at Philadelphia (19-19)
When: Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 2:00 PM ET
Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Philadelphia, PA

Analysis: The Sixers have gone 5-5 over their last 10 games, but they hit the new week riding the wave of an impressive four-game winning streak that includes a win over the Spurs on Wednesday and a 114-78 beatdown of the Pistons on Friday night. Unfortunately, for the Sixers, they’re going to be taking on a Boston Celtics team that has won seven of their last 10, including six straight heading into the new week with wins over the Rockets and Cavaliers included in the streak. While Philly is well on its way back to respectability with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons leading the way, clearly Boston is a bit further along as far as being an elite title contender. Boston has beaten Philadelphia in both meetings this season with each win coming by at least eight points. The C’s are on the road in this one, but I’m expecting them to extend their winning ways against the rebuilding Sixers, although I’m thinking this one could end in a fantastic finish!

Pick: Celtics 104 Sixers 101

Cleveland (26-13) at Indiana (20-19)
When: Friday, January 12, 2018 at 6:00 PM ET
Where: Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, IN

Analysis: The Cavaliers are a modest 5-5 over their last 10 games, but they hit the new week coming off a 131-127 win over Orlando on Saturday night as Isaiah Thomas played his second game of the season. Indiana has gone 4-6 over its last 10 and enters the new week coming off a 125-86 spanking of the Chicago Bulls on Saturday. Believe it or not, the Pacers have won both regular-season meetings against the Cavaliers, but I’m thinking the Cavs know that and they’re going to go all out to get the win in this one. Cleveland is averaging almost 20 points per game more than they were before Thomas was in the lineup and it is that kind of offensive explosiveness that will carry them to the road win in this matchup, not that it’s going to help them dethrone the Warriors if they meet again in the NBA Finals.

Pick: Cavaliers 116 Pacers 109

NHL Expert Picks Jan 8-14th

Can the struggling Carolina Hurricanes pull off the upset over Alex Ovechkin and the red-hot Washington Capitals on Thursday night?

Can Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks slow down the streaking Winnipeg Jets when they host their conference rivals one night later?

Last but not least, can the underachieving Edmonton Oilers slow down the runaway express train that is the expansion Vegas Knights when they throw down on Saturday?

Carolina (19-14-8) at Washington (26-13-3)
When: Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 7:30 PM ET
Where: Capital One Arena, Washington, DC

The Carolina Hurricanes are 6-3-1 over its last 10 games, but they got blown out of the water in their 7-1 loss to Boston on Saturday. Washington has gone 7-2-1 over their last 10 and got past St. Louis 4-3 with an overtime win against on Sunday.

Right now, this Thursday night matchup is easy picking as Alex Ovechkin and the Caps hold it down at home simply because they’ve been better at both ends of the ice than Carolina all season. Washington ranks 10th in scoring (3.1 gpg) and 15th in goals allowed (2.8 gpg) while Carolina ranks in the bottom third in both, scoring (2.7 gpg) and goals allowed (3.0 gpg).

Pick: Washington 4 Carolina 2

Winnipeg (25-11-7) at Chicago (20-15-6)
When: Friday, January 12, 2018 at 8:30 PM ET
Where: United Center, Chicago, IL

Winnipeg is 7-2-1 over their last 10 games and has won two straight entering the new week including a convincing 4-1 win over San Jose on Sunday night. Chicago has been solid in going 5-4-1 over their last 10 games, including their 4-1 win over the Edmonton the last time out. While the Blackhawks are ranked a solid 11th in scoring (3.0 gpg) and respectable 13th in goals allowed (2.8 gpg) Winnipeg sis the pick in this one simply because they’ve been the better team at both ends of the ice this season.

The Jets are ranked an impressive third in scoring this season (3.3 gpg) and ninth in goals allowed (2.7 gpg) and have a legitimate Hart trophy contender in right winger Blake Wheeler (50 points). Winnipeg has gone 9-8-6 on the road this season, but I like them to improve on that mark by nailing down the win in this one against a Chicago team that looks like it will need to reload following this season if they want to get back to being perennial title favorites.

Pick: Winnipeg 4 Chicago 3

Edmonton (18-22-3) at Vegas (29-10-2)
Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 10:00 PM ET
Where: T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, NV

Last but not least, the incendiary Vegas Knights are the easy pick to beat an Edmonton Oilers team that has underachieved all season long. Vegas has won nine of their last 10 games and two straight heading into the new week including their hard-fought 2-1 win over the Rangers on Sunday.

Conversely, the Oilers have struggled in going 4-5-1 over their last 10 games and enters the new week riding a two-game losing streak. The Knights rank a stupendous second in the NHL in scoring (3.4 gpg) while also ranking a very solid 11th in goals allowed (2.7 gpg). Edmonton has been pretty awful at both ends of the ice and will lose this matchup by at least three goals NHL bettors!

Pick: Vegas 5 Edmonton 2
