NBA Expert Picks Jan 15-21

NBA Expert Picks Jan 15-21

Can the Rockets hold off the upstart Minnesota T’Wolves on Thursday, Jan. 18? On Saturday, Houston hosts Golden State. Will it be the Rockets or the Warriors to make a statement on Jan. 20? The other game I like takes place earlier on Saturday. Who wins in a gargantuan matchup between two NBA MVPs, Russell Westbrook, and LeBron James?

NBA Expert Picks Jan 15-21, 2018

Minnesota at Houston
When:  Thursday, Jan. 18 at 9:30 pm ET
Where: Toyota Center, Houston, TX

Analysis: The top team in the Northwest Division, Minnesota is good on both offense and defense. The T’Wolves average 108.5 points per game. That ranks sixth in the NBA. Minny shoots 47.6% from the field. That ranks fifth in the NBA. On defense, the T’Wolves allow 104.7 points per game. That ranks thirteenth in the NBA. Minnesota only allows 36% shooting from three. That ranks thirteenth in the league.

But, the reason the T’Wolves only allow 36% from three is because opponents love to shoot from the field versus Minnesota. The T’Wolves allow opponents to shoot 47.5% from the field. That ranks twenty-ninth in the NBA.

Houston shoots 46% from the field. The Rockets also shoot 36.3% from three. It’s difficult to see Minnesota upsetting Houston on the road on Thursday.

Pick: Houston

Oklahoma City at Cleveland
When:  Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3:30 pm ET
Where: Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland, OH

Analysis: Oklahoma City is behind the T’Wolves in the Northwest Division. The Thunder are trying to make up ground. For some reason, things haven’t clicked for OKC just yet.

It’s difficult to see things clicking versus LeBron and the Cleveland Cavaliers in a road tilt on Saturday. Oklahoma City must try to keep up with one of the highest-scoring teams in the NBA. The Cavs average 109.5 points per game off 47.1% shooting from the field.

Cleveland shoots 37.2% from three. I believe Cleveland beats Russell and the OKC Thunder by at least 7 points this Saturday.

Pick: Cleveland

Golden State at Houston
When:  Saturday, Jan. 20 at 8:30 pm ET
Where: Toyota Center, Houston, TX

Analysis: Golden State is a bad matchup for the Houston Rockets. The Rockets play decent defense. Golden State’s offense is the best in the NBA, though.

The Warriors average 115.8 points per game. They shoot 51% from the field. They shoot close to 39% from three. Houston can beat Golden State if they play perfectly. I don’t believe that happens on Saturday.

It shouldn’t happen mainly because the Rockets battle the Clippers and Minnesota before taking on Golden State. The Warriors should beat the Rockets by around 6 to 10 points on Jan. 20.

Pick: Golden State

NCAA Hoops Expert Picks Jan 15-21

You have to wait until the weekend to cash in on my college basketball expert picks. Texas heads to Morgantown to battle #2 West Virginia in a huge Big 12 matchup. Can the Mountaineers hold off the rival Longhorns? #10 Xavier battles #13 Seton Hall in a big game on Saturday. Will Seton Hall protect its home court versus Big East rival Xavier? Also on Saturday, Baylor travels to Kansas to battle the Jayhawks. Will Kansas thump the Baylor Bears?

College Basketball Expert Picks Jan 15-21, 2018

Texas at #2 West Virginia
When:  Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2:00 pm ET
Where: WVU Coliseum, Morgantown, West Virginia

Analysis: West Virginia is at the top of the Big 12 standings. Why? Jevon Carter. The 6’2” guard averages 16.8 points per game. He averages over 5 boards per while dishing 6.5 assists per. Carter is tough to stop.

I don’t believe the Texas Longhorns are good enough to stop Jevon Carter. The thing about Carter’s game is that if Texas spends too much effort stopping Carter, he’s just going to get his teammates involved.

There’s a good chance the Mountaineers blowout the rival Longhorns on Saturday.

Pick: West Virginia

#10 Xavier at #13 Seton Hall
When:  Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2:30 pm ET
Where: Prudential Center, Newark, NJ

Analysis: The Big East is loaded with fantastic college hoops teams. That’s every college basketball season, right?

On Saturday, two of the best in the Big East throw down when Xavier travels to New Jersey to take on the Seton Hall Pirates. The Pirates average 80 points per game while shooting 47.8% from the field.

The last time the Pirates battled the Xavier Musketeers, they beat them 71 to 64. That was back on February 22, 2017. Seton Hall is better this season than they were last season. Forward Desi Rodriguez has scored in double-figures in every game save for one.

That’s why I like the Pirates. Xavier’s Trevor Bluiett is great. However, he’s a guard. I don’t believe the Musketeers can stop Rodriguez.

Pick: Seton Hall

Baylor at #12 Kansas
When:  Saturday, Jan. 20 at 6:00 pm ET
Where: Allen Fieldhouse, Lawrence, KS

Analysis: There’s still hope for the Baylor Bears. The Bears started out the season ranked in the Top 20. Since then, they’ve lost 6 games. That’s left them out of the Top 25.

No worries. A win over ranked #12 Kansas should lead to another Top 25 ranking. Can the Bears do it? Can they go to Allen Fieldhouse and beat the mighty Kansas Jayhawks?

I believe they can. The Jayhawks always have an issue scoring against Baylor’s tough defense. Kansas is an up and down team. They average 85.8 points per game while allowing over 70 per.

Those averages should work in patient Baylor’s favor. I like the Bears to pull off the upset.

Pick: Baylor

NHL Expert Picks Jan 15-21

NHL Expert Picks Jan 15-21

On Thursday, Jan. 18, Pittsburgh heads to L.A. to battle the Kings. Can the Penguins get their quest for a third straight Stanley Cup back on track? NBC’s nationally broadcast game on Sunday has Philadelphia battling Washington in D.C. Who wins when two of the more historical franchises throw down in the nation’s capital? TSN’s top nationally broadcast game on Sunday is between Vancouver and Winnipeg. Can the Jets continue their status atop the tough Central Division?

NHL Expert Picks Jan 15-21, 2018

Pittsburgh at Los Angeles
When:  Thursday, Jan. 18 at 10:00 pm ET
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, CA

Analysis: Slowly, the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins are climbing back into Metropolitan Division contention. The Pens must continue to keep winning if they hope to have a real shot at the Cup three-peat.

Pitt battles a solid L.A. Kings squad on Thursday. The Kings rank first in NHL in goals against. L.A. allows 2.4 goals per match. But, the Kings are all about defense. That means Pitt has a real shot of pulling off the money line upset.

I’ll back the Pens to beat the Kings at the Staples Center on Jan. 18.

Pick: Pittsburgh

Philadelphia at Washington
When:  Sunday, Jan. 21 at 3:30 pm ET
Where: Capital One Arena, Washington, D.C.

Analysis: Philadelphia travels to Washington to face-off against the Metropolitan Division-leading Washington Capitals. The Caps have overtaken the Columbus Blue Jackets. Washington ranks eleventh in goals scored per match.

The ranking doesn’t look overly impressive. Then, we realize that Washington only averages 29 shots per match. That ranks thirty-first in NHL. The Caps are excellent at scoring goals on less shots than almost every other team in the league.

I don’t see the Philadelphia Flyers doing enough to upset the Caps in Sunday’s NBC televised match. I’m siding with the Washington Capitals.

Pick: Washington

Vancouver at Winnipeg
When:  Sunday, Jan. 21 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Bell MTS Place, Winnipeg, MB, CA

Analysis: Vancouver is one of the worst teams in the talented Pacific Division. Only Arizona has a worse record than the Vancouver Canucks. That’s bad news for Vancouver fans because they face the top team in the Central Division, the Winnipeg Jets, on Sunday night.

Winnipeg leads the Central Division over Nashville, St. Louis, Minnesota, Dallas, and Chicago. Those are 4 Stanley Cup Contenders that Winnipeg is currently leading. Can the Jets keep it up? Maybe. Maybe not.

It won’t matter versus Vancouver at home on Jan. 21. The Jets should beat the Canucks by at least 2 goals.

Pick: Winnipeg
