The 2018 Stanley Cup Favorite: Nashville Predators +450
The NHL oddsmakers believe in last season’s Western Conference champion Nashville Predators. So should you bet on the Preds to win the Stanley Cup this season?
The Preds won the President’s Trophy with the league’s best record at 52-18-11. In 2017, Nashville lost the Cup in six games the Penguins. With the season nearing the end, they are the oddsmakers’ top choice to win the Cup.
The odds are usually against the President’s Trophy winner of going on to also win the Stanley Cup. The odds of reaching two consecutive Stanley Cup Finals further pushes the odds in to despair.
The 2018 Stanley Cup Public Pick: Vegas Golden Knights +700
Can an expansion team win the Stanley Cup in their first season? The Golden Knights are the first NHL team to clinch a playoff berth in its inaugural season since 1979-80.
That year it was rookie Wayne Gretzky led who the Edmonton Oilers to the playoffs. They went on to lose the first-round in three-games.
The Knights don’t have a Gretzky, but are a bigger threat than the rookie Oilers were to go all the way. The Knights have been a season long winner for bettors and are a top-five team. The 79-80 Oilers, outside of 99, showed no signs of the future 80’s NHL dynasty they would become.
The Knights do have Marc-Andre Fleury. The winner of three Stanley Cups with the Pens was claimed on expansion waivers before the season began and has a 29-12-4 record.
The Smart Stanley Cup Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins +950
How are the defending champions not in the top-five on the Stanley Cup betting board?
The current puck stopper in Las Vegas played his whole career in Pittsburgh. This past offseason, Golden Knights picked him up off waivers.
Don’t get me wrong current top Pitt puck stopper Matt Murray is amazing. He won two Cups in less than two full seasons. He is also injury prone and has dealt with concussions this year. If he can stay on the ice, the Pens will be a threat to three-peat. If not, backup Casey DeSmith has played a total of 14 pro games.
The Longshot Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs +1350
The Toronto Maple Leafs have clinched a playoff spot for the second straight season. In 2017, the Leafs lost in the first round to the Caps in six games. Canada hasn’t won a Cup since 1993. Can the Toronto Maple Leafs surprise the hockey world and claim their 14th Stanley Cup? Their first since 1963.
Head coach Mike Babcock has won in the NHL and the Olympics. He knows how to prepare a team for big games. Combine that with a well travelling Leafs fans contigant and a goalie on a hot-streak, you have a possible long shot winning the Cup.
