My MLB expert betting picks this week start on Friday, April 20th, when Washington heads to Chavez-Ravine to face the Dodgers. Can the Nationals upset the Dodgers on the road?
On Saturday, the Mets battle the Braves in Atlanta. Should you bet on NYM or Atlanta?
Sunday’s top pick has Tampa Bay hosting Minnesota. Will the Twins or Rays get it done on Sunday?
MLB Expert Picks April 16-22
Washington at L.A. Dodgers
When: Friday, April 20 at 10:10 pm ET
Where: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
TV: ESPN +
Analysis: Washington should start ace Max Scherzer on Friday. Scherzer has started out the season as if he’s hunting for another Cy Young. His record is 3 and 1. His ERA is 1.33. His WHIP is .67. Scherzer allows the Dodgers to bat .148 against him.
If the Dodgers hope to beat Washington, they must get Scherzer out of the game before the 7th inning. Will that be possible? I don’t think so. It’s early in the season. That means Max Scherzer should be strong enough to go at least 7 innings if not 8.
The longer Scherzer goes, the easier it will be for the Nats to protect their bullpen. I’m siding with Washington.
NY Mets at Atlanta
When: Saturday, April 21 at 7:10 pm ET
Where: SunTrust Park, Smyrna, GA
TV: ESPN +
Analysis: The New York Mets head to Smyrna, GA, to battle the Braves on Saturday. The Mets are scheduled to start one of their best pitchers, Jacob deGrom. So far, deGrom is in excellent form. His ERA is 3.06. He’s also got a 2 and 0 record and a 1.13 WHIP.
deGrom holds Atlanta batters to a .247 batting average. He figures to be a heavy favorite over the Atlanta Braves and Braves’ starter Julio Teheran.
Teheran’s 7.07 ERA and 0 and 1 record doesn’t inspire confidence. However, the Mets bat .219 versus Teheran. I believe he and Atlanta are worth backing at what should be decent underdog odds.
Minnesota at Tampa Bay
When: Sunday, April 22 at 1:10 pm ET
Where: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, FL
Analysis: Minnesota starter Jake Odorizzi used to throw for the Tampa Bay Rays. He might have some inside information on how the Rays plan to win this game on Sunday.
Not only that, but Odorizzi has pitched well in 16.1 innings. His ERA is 2.20. His WHIP is 1.35. He’s got a 1 and 0 record. I’m taking a shot on Odorizzi to get it done versus Tampa Bay’s batting lineup. He should offer above even money odds. I’m backing Odorizzi to handle his former teammates. Hopefully, he’ll come through.
