MLB Expert Picks May 21-27

MLB Expert Picks May 21-27

My MLB Expert Picks for the week of May 21 through May 27 begin on Friday. The New York Mets travel to Milwaukee to battle the Brewers. Will the Brewers or Mets take this game? On Saturday, May 26, Seattle hosts Minnesota at Safeco Field. Can the Twins beat Seattle on the road? Sunday’s expert pick game happens in San Francisco Giants at Chicago Cubs. Who takes it in ESPN 2’s nationally broadcast game on May 27?

MLB Expert Picks May 21-27

New York Mets at Milwaukee
When:  Friday, May 25 at 8:10 pm ET
Where: Miller Park, Milwaukee, WI
TV:  ESPN+

Analysis: Arguably the Mets’ top pitcher, Noah Syndergaard has done everything right since this season started. His ERA is a nice 3.14. He’s struck out 61 batters in 51.2 innings. His WHIP is 1.22. There’s a lot to like about Syndergaard heading into this Friday match up.

However, his record is only 3 and 1. Not only that, but the Mets had to pull Noah after only 5 inning in a game on 5/15. Does that mean the Brewers have a shot?

I don’t believe so. Milwaukee bats only 1.57 versus Noah Syndergaard. Not only that, but NYM has gone 6 and 3 straight up in the 9 games Syndergaard’s started. I like the New York Mets to take it.

Pick: New York Mets

Minnesota at Seattle
When:  Saturday, May 26 at 10:10 pm ET
Where: Safeco Field, Seattle, WA
TV: ESPN+

Analysis: Minnesota lists Jake Odorizzi as their Saturday starter versus the Seattle Mariners on May 26. Odorizzi has pitched well this season. He’s got a 3 and 2 record with a 3.35 ERA. The Mariners bat .232 versus Odorizzi. They’ve got 22 hits from 95 at bats.

The Mariners counter with pitcher Wade LeBlanc. LeBlanc was sensational in a start on May 14. He pitched 6 innings, allowed only 3 hits, and didn’t give up a run. He also struck out 4.

That was versus Minnesota. That means Wade LeBlanc is in line for another stellar outing. I believe he shuts down the Mariners again.

Pick: Minnesota

San Francisco at Chicago Cubs
When:  Sunday, May 27 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL
TV: ESPN 2

Analysis: Sunday night’s battle between SF and the Cubs should be a great one. The Cubs start Yu Darvish. So far, Darvish hasn’t panned out in the Windy City. His ERA is a monstrous 5.56. His record is a terrible 0 and 3. His WHIP is a gruesome 1.53.

The Cubs are 4 and 3 straight up when Darvish starts. At least, that’s a winning Cubbies’ record when Yu hits the mound. But, it’s tough to back the Cubs right now. They just don’t appear to have the right chemistry.

I’m going with San Francisco to, hopefully, win as a dog on May 27.

Pick: San Francisco

2018 Preakness Odds with Post Positions

  1. Quip +2000
  2. Lone Sailor +3000
  3. Sporting Chance +4000
  4. Diamond King +3000
  5. Good Magic +350
  6. Tenfold +4000
  7. Justify -230
  8. Bravazo +2800

Preakness Key Horse: Justify -230

Justify won the Kentucky Derby as a favorite. He keyed a ridiculous over $19,000 superfecta. That won’t happen on Saturday in the Preakness Stakes. Justify will win, but he won’t key a huge superfecta. He could key a decent superfecta if Good Magic doesn’t show up until the show slot. That’s why using Justify as the key in the super makes sense.

Second Place Preakness Superfecta Pick

Quip +2000

He has every right to improve after his Tampa Bay Derby win. Also, he’s fresh. I think he has a shot to finish second.

Diamond King +3000

He could beat Quip for second place. I believe he’s coming into his own while most of his competition has already shown their best. That makes him dangerous.

Third Place Preakness Superfecta Pick

** Also using Quip and Diamond King

Good Magic +350

There’s a chance he finishes second to Justify just like he did two weeks ago in the Kentucky Derby. If he does, good for him. The super won’t pay anything, though. That’s why he doesn’t show up until third place on my superfecta Preakness Stakes ticket.

Fourth Place Preakness Superfecta Pick

** Also use Quip, Diamond King, and Good Magic

  • Bravazo +2800
  • Sporting Chance +4000
  • Tenfold +4000
  • Lone Sailor +3000

For the fourth slot, I’m going all. If Justify wins, and either Quip, or Diamond King finishes second, while either Quip, Diamond King, or Good Magic finish third, why not go all for the fourth slot? All four have a shot to finish fourth. Even Sporting Chance, who doesn’t appear to have any shot to win, could beat Bravazo, Tenfold, or Lone Sailor for fourth place.

In fact, his chances of finishing fourth might be better than Bravazo’s, Tenfold’s, or Lone Sailors because he’s got the worst shot to win. His jockey might not even try to win.

One of the horses above could easily finish fourth at huge odds. It wouldn’t make sense not to use every horse in the fourth slot.

2018 Preakness Stakes Trifecta Pick

If you are looking to make some serious cash on the 2018 Preakness, then a winning trifecta bet will do just the trick. I have looked over the eight-horse field and have made my Preakness trifecta picks. Happy hunting!

  5. Good Magic +350

  7. Justify -230
  8. Bravazo +2800

Preakness Key Horse: Justify -230

The key to the trifecta isn’t to leave Justify out of the win slot. Justify could win the Triple Crown this year. Also, trainer Bob Baffert has never lost the Preakness with a horse that won the Kentucky Derby. There’s just too many signs that Justify is the real deal.

The key to a nice trifecta payout isn’t leaving Justify off the ticket. The real key is to leave Good Magic, the second choice, out of the trifecta all together.

Second Place Preakness Trifecta Pick

Quip +2000

The Tampa Bay Derby win was impressive. Not only that, but there’s a good chance he’s become a better racehorse now than he was finishing second to Magnum Moon in the Arkansas Derby. If he is, and Good Magic is too tired to hit the board, Quip becomes the horse to finish second to Justify in the tri.

Diamond King +3000

One thing about Diamond King’s last race, a win, is that it was his first start since Feb. 3. Trainer John Servis had kept Diamond King on the bench since he bombed in the Grade 3 Swale at 7 furlongs. The fact that Diamond King beat Noble Commander and held off a horse like Holland Park at 1 1/8 miles in his first race off a layoff means that he’ll have a shot to finish second to the brilliant Justify.

Third Place Preakness Trifecta Pick

** Also using Quip and Diamond King

  • Bravazo +2800
  • Sporting Chance +4000
  • Tenfold +4000
  • Lone Sailor +3000

I’m using every horse in the race to finish third save for Good Magic (pictured). The key for my trifecta on Saturday is for Good Magic to finish out of the money. If that happens, the tri could pay handsomely even after Justify wins the race.

The reason is because at +350, Good Magic should garner plenty of attention in the trifecta pools. Just by leaving him out of the top 3 all together should increase the trifecta payout.
