The Preakness Stakes takes place on Saturday, May 19. Early 2018 Preakness Stakes betting odds, as to be expected, favor the Derby winner, Justify.

Justify looked so great winning the Derby that some horse racing fans have already declared him a Triple Crown winner. Is that the case? Is Justify such a great horse that even attempting to beat him on May 19 is foolish? Keep reading to find out who can compete with the Derby winner at the 2018 Preakness.

2018 Preakness Odds & Picks
- Justify -225

- Quip +1600
- Diamond King +2000
- Bravazo, Sporting Chance, Tenfold, Lone Sailor +2500
The Preakness Stakes Betting Favorite: Justify -225
He sure looks unbeatable. Well, he is undefeated. In 4 lifetime races, Justify has 4 wins. He broke his maiden. He easily won an allowance race. He beat Bolt d’Oro in the Santa Anita Derby. He handled his 19 competitors in the Kentucky Derby.
What’s not to like about Justify? Not much, that’s for sure. However, winning the Preakness Stakes isn’t always a given. Justify didn’t break his maiden until this year, 2018. The Preakness will be his fourth race since breaking his maiden in the span of less than 6 months.
That’s a lot of racing for any horse. The fact that the Preakness comes off the toughest race of his career over a tiring sloppy track means that he could be vulnerable to an upset. I’m looking elsewhere because I’m not convinced he’s a lock to win the Preakness.
The Preakness Stakes Smart Pick: Diamond King +2000
Diamond King tracked a slow pace in his last, a win in the Federico Tesio Stakes. The real reason to like Diamond King is because he’ll be much fresher than any horse that ran in the Kentucky Derby. Not only that, but his trainer, John Servis, is one of the best in the nation.
There’s a chance Diamond King holds out for the Belmont Stakes. I hope that doesn’t happen because he’d have a decent shot of winning the Preakness if Justify is too tired to get the job done.
Holland Park did almost nab Diamond King on the wire in the Federico Tesio. That’s okay. Holland Park is a decent horse while Diamond King believed the race was over after he put away Noble Commander. He’s got a shot.
The 2018 Preakness Longshot Pick: Bravazo +2500
Bravazo ran much better in the Kentucky Derby than anyone thought he would. He finished sixth after running 4 wide around the first turn and 5 wide around the second turn. He’s a decent horse that runs for a trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, who has thrown up surprises before.
Oxbow won the Preakness Stakes after showing grit in the Derby. Bravazo could be D. Wayne’s next Oxbow. I can’t dismiss Bravazo’s chances, that’s for sure.
