The Odds-On Betting Favorite: Serena Williams +400

Serena Williams beat Jessica Pegula 6-3, 6-4 at the ASB Classic Finals. That’s why oddsmakers made Serena the +400 favorite to win the Australian Open. The 2020 Aussie Open is the first major tennis tournament of the year. By winning the ASB Classic, Serena took home her first tournament trophy in 3 years.

She had been close. But she hadn’t won a championship since giving birth to her daughter. Does the ASB Classic win mean that Serena is back? It might. Before we jump on Williams at +450, though, we should consider some things.

Serena has won 7 Australian Opens during her career. Her last Aussie Open win happened in 2017. She beat sister Venus 6-4, 6-4 that year. She didn’t play at the Australian Open in 2018. Last year, she bowed out in the quarterfinals to Karolina Pliskova.

Not only that, but she faced a single player of note at the ASB Classic. Serena beat 18-year-old Amanda Anisimova 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals. Williams didn’t face Bianca Andreescu, Naomi Osaka, Simona Halep, at the ASB Classic.

What does it mean? It means that even though Serena could win the 2020 Australian Open, she’s not a great bet as the favorite. The women’s game is deep. Look elsewhere for your Aussie Open win bet.

The Smart Betting Pick: Naomi Osaka +700

Naomi Osaka upset Serena 6-2, 6-4 at the 2018 U.S. Open. She didn’t make it out of the fourth round at the 2019 U.S. Open. But early in 2019, she showed she’s one of the top tennis players in the world.

Osaka won the 2019 Australian Open. She beat Petra Kvitova 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-4. Naomi failed to match that effort in the other 3 major tournaments. She could make it back-to-back Aussie Open wins, though. Her form appears to be on the upswing. Osaka fell to Karolina Pliskova at the Brisbane International this past week.

Karolina beat Naomi 7-6 (12-10), 6-7 (3-7), 2-6. It was the type of performance Osaka needed heading into a major tournament. If Naomi’s form has turned around, she can win the 2020 Australian Open at nice +700 odds. Consider backing the 2019 Aussie Open winner to make it 2 in a row.

The Long Shot Pick: Karolina Pliskova +1200

After beating Osaka, Pliskova beat Madison Keys in the Brisbane International Finals. Karolina handled Keys 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to win the Brisbane International. That sets Pliskova up for a deep Australian Open run.

The closest she came was last year. Karolina can build upon that semifinal finish to Osaka at the 2019 Australian Open. She’s got as good of a chance of winning the 2020 Aussie Open as her competitors have. It’s not often that we can put money behind a great tennis player in excellent form at +1200. Karolina Pliskova can take her first major tournament title with an Australian Open win.

ATP Australian Open Odds & Top Picks

Odds-On Betting Favorite: Novak Djokovic +130

Novak Djokovic offers the lowest odds to win the 2020 Australian Open. Reasons exist for tennis bettors to swallow the low odds. Novak has taken home 7 Australian Open singles trophies. He dominated his competition at the 2019 Australian Open.

But although Djokovic presents a challenge for his competitors, he’s not a great player to back. Novak did win the Aussie Open last year. It was his first Australian Open victory since 2016, though. He won three in a row from 2011 to 2013. He won back-to-back in 2015-2016. If history is any indication, Djokovic doesn’t win the Australian Open this year.

It makes sense to play against Djokovic for that reason. Again, he could dominate Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Danil Medvedev. History says he won’t. If the odds were higher, we could go against history. At +155 Djokovic is a play against.

The Smart Betting Pick: Rafael Nadal +475

Although Rafa lost to Novak Djokovic in the last head-to-head, he could turn the tables on that rival. That is, he could if he meets Djokovic at the 2020 Australian Open. Nadal has one Australian Open victory to his credit. That happened in 2009.

But Rafa won both the French Open and U.S. Open last year. He also had a deep run at the 2019 Australian Open. Nadal handled Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 in the semifinals. He fell to Djokovic 3-6, 2-6, 3-6 in the finals.

In the last matchup versus Djokovic, the ATP Cup, Rafael pushed Novak in the second set. He lost the second set 6-7, (4-7). Rafael Nadal has a real shot of taking his second Aussie Open title this year. And, he offers more than double Djokovic’s odds to do so.

The Longshot Betting Pick: Roger Federer +1000

Roger Federer has yet to play in 2020. But the 38-year-old master should have a fantastic year. At the 2019 Australian Open, Federer fell to Stefanos Tsitsipas in 7-set marathon. FedEx bounced back in his next tournament, the Dubai Duty Free. He beat Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-4.

Roger hasn’t played since November. He often takes time off before major tournaments. A well-rested Roger Federer can beat Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Federer is the best longshot on the board.

Rejoice tennis fans! The 2019 U.S. Open is here and Serena is the early betting favorite to take home the crown for the women’s side. Keep reading for more tennis odds and picks.

Women’s U.S. Open Odds & Picks

Women’s U.S. Open Betting Favorite: Serena Williams +450

Is the U.S. Open the tennis major where Serena Williams finally gets back on track? Serena has played excellent tennis in 2019. She made it to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open. She made it to the finals at Wimbledon. Unfortunately, Serena lost in both major tournaments.

Karolina Pliskova knocked her out at the Australian Open. Simona Halep easily beat here at Wimbledon. At the French Open, Serena wasn’t herself at all. Sofia Kenin took her down 6-2, 5-7 in Round 3. Not closing the deal on Pliskova, Kenin, or Halep is a sign Serena’s not yet back to her old, dominant, self.

Williams also retired at the Rogers Cup. Facing Bianca Andreescu in the finals, Serena didn’t want to go on in the second set after losing the first set 1-3. Overall, she’s playing good enough tennis to be competitive. It’s hard to see Serena winning the final major of the year, though.

Women’s U.S. Open Smart Pick: Simona Halep +800

Since taking Wimbledon in mid-July, Simona Halep has failed to impress. Maria Bouzkova knocked her out in the quarterfinals at the Rogers Cup. Madison Keyes beat her 1-6, 6-3, 5-7 at the Western & Southern Open in Simona’s last tournament played.

Although Halep hasn’t dominated, she’s playing well enough to have a say at the U.S. Open. Simona hasn’t played well at the U.S. Open since making the semifinals in 2015. However, this year there’s something different about her game. She was exceptional at Wimbledon, battled Serena hard in a loss at the Australian Open, and lost in the quarterfinals at the French Open.

She can most definitely go far in Flushing Meadows. If you’re looking for a logical smart play at decent odds, Simona Halep is that play.

Women’s U.S. Open Longshot Pick: Cori Gauff +8000

The odds on Cori Gauff make her one of the most attractive overlay plays at the 2019 U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. Sure, she’s only 15-years-old. And, yep, at her last tournament played, the Citi Open, Zarina Diyas knocked her out in the first round in straight sets.

But, that was Gauff’s first tournament played since her amazing run at Wimbledon. How well did Cori play in the UK? In Round 1, she beat Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4. In her next match, she beat Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3, 6-3. Then, she took out Polona Hercog 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 in the third round.

It took Simona Halep to stop Cori Gauff’s Wimbledon run. Halep went on to lift the hardware. Her coach and manager have been smart about where she plays. Gauff should have more energy than many of her opponents. Yes, she’s a longshot, but her pure tennis ability makes her an overlay at +8000.
