Betting on Tiger, Rory or Jordan Win The 2015 US Open

The U.S. Open is known to produce unexpected winners. But that still doesn’t mean you should bet against Tiger, Rory or Jordan to win at Chambers Bay.

The second golf major is upon us as the sport’s best and brightest head to Chambers Bay in University Place, WA this weekend to get a cut of the $9 million combined purse and 600 FedEx points.

The odds on favorites to win the 115th U.S. Open are the top two ranked golfers in the world. Top-ranked Rory McIlroy is listed at 6/1 and second-ranked Jordan Spieth is at 7/1, while Tiger is listed at a distant 33/1 odds to win at Chambers Bay.

“There’s going to be someone lifting the trophy at the end of the week,” McIlroy told the Associated Press. “It’s a bit of an unknown to most people, so you have to prepare. But you can fall into the trap of trying to over-prepare.”

Other favorites to win include Dustin Johnson (16-1), Phil Mickelson (18-1), Justin Rose (18-1) and Ricky Fowler (18-1).

Should You Bet on Tiger, Rory or Jordan To Win The 2015 US Open?

Tiger Woods, 33/1

Tigers’ chances at having success at Chambers Bay are bad to none. He simply isn’t in good enough form to conquer arguably the toughest course that the U.S. Open has been played on in years. You have to be creative on the course and use the slopes of the course to get closer to the greens than your opponents. That’s tough to do when you’re struggling to make the cut at Murfield Village. Tiger used to dominate courses like Murfield Village but the 85 that he shot in the third-round in early June at Murfield suggests that he just doesn’t have it. Stay away unless the odds jump up to 80 to 1.

Rory McIlroy, 6/1

Rory’s game should be perfect for Chambers Bay. He can get very creative with his shot and, more importantly, his average drive is 321. You want to have the ability to get far enough off of the tee so that you can set up easier shots for you once you get onto the green. Using the slopes also requires golfers to get into a good enough position with the first shot to utilize the slopes with the second shot on the par 4’s. McIlroy has both feel and power. He’s the favorite to back.

Jordan Spieth, 7/1

The Masters winner played Chambers Bay at the 2010 U.S. Amateur. It was a par 71 that day and Spieth shot an 83. That’s how tough the course is. Spieth has grown a lot in the 5 years since then. He should show up and provide a good first 2 Rounds, but the odds are awfully short on Spieth. It’s tough to win one major in a year. Spieth is going for his second.

Spieth is one of the few competitors with experience at Chambers Bay, which has been hyped as one of the most difficult ever to host the U.S. Open, though not all of it good. In 2010, he withdrew from the U.S. Amateur Championship after shooting an 11-over-par 83 in the second round.

“Players that have played there, especially in the 2010 U.S. Amateur, are going to be at a monumental advantage, about how to position certain shots, how to play certain holes,” Golf Channel analyst Notah Begay said.

Said Spieth: “I didn’t really see much of it. Actually, I saw a lot of it — I didn’t see much of the places I want to see.”

He’s got a shot.

Before betting on him, demand higher odds.

Phil Mickelson, 18/1

Golf bettors looking for a fair odds play need look no further than Lefty. Mickelson has the type of game that should him set him up perfectly for success at Chambers Bay. He plays with a lot of feel, he has a lot of power, and he’s as creative as they get on the golf course. Mickelson finished second in the Masters. Consider for a wager.
