My 2014 Belmont Stakes Expert Exacta Picks
California Chrome 3-5 To Win
California Chrome is attempting to become the 12th horse to win the Triple Crown and he’s looking better than most recent Triple Crown threats if you ask me after ripping off six straight wins with four of them coming in stakes, including the G-1 Santa Anita Derby and G-2 San Felipe
Chrome is also looking to make a bit of history with only two California-bred mounts having won the Belmont Stakes (Comanche, 1893) and (Africander, 1903)
Ride On Curlin 12-1 To Place
Ride On Curlin almost caught California Chrome at the Preakness Stakes and may have need just another couple of furlongs in order to do so after finishing just 1½ lengths behind the favorite. It’s important that this thoroughbred is running out of the No. 5 post position, seeing as how he finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby after being forced nine wide into the stretch.
"I thought all along this might be his best distance," says Billy Gowan of Ride On Curlin.

Ride On Curlin finished second in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, third in the Grade 2 Rebel, third in the Grade 3 Southwest and third in the Grade 1 Champagne. Sire, Curlin was twice named Horse of the Year, in 2007 and 2008, as well as champion 3-year-old and Champion Older Male Horse, so Ride On Curlin certainly comes from exemplary stock.
Pair Tonalist 8-1 In Your Exacta For Bigger Winnings
Yes, I know this is an exacta pick – and that I didn’t pick Tonalist to even show in the Belmont Stakes, but the fact of the matter is that I genuinely believe this mount could upset the entire apple cart by bringing home the bacon as the outright winner. In four career starts, the bay colt has compiled a record of 2-1-0 and should provide a stiff challenge to all of the elite favorites in the 2014 Belmont Stakes field.
So, theoretically, if you wanted to pair California Chrome with Tonalist or Ride On Curlin with Tonalist, to form your own exacta, I’d say you made solid choices that could pan out profitably. My pick to show, Wicked Strong is another thoroughbred you may want to look at pairing with one or two of the aforementioned thoroughbreds!
