Kentucky Derby morning-line favorite California Chrome drew post position No. 5 and is a 5-2 favorite to win the 140th "Run for the Roses."
Other contenders for the first of the Triple Crown races are Wicked Strong and Danza. Both were able to avoid the dreaded No. 1 post. Wicked Strong drew the No. 20 gate while Danza will break from the No. 4 gate.
In addition to the age-old exacta and trifecta wagers, you can now make a multitude of ‘exotic bets’ wagers that have the potential to boost your perennial horse racing bankroll far beyond anything you could imagine.

2014 Kentucky Derby Exotic Betting Picks
The superfecta is a pretty simple wager, but not very easy to cash in on or else, everyone would make this wager a part of their routine wagering method. Simply put, you’re going to need to pick each of the first four finishers correctly – and in order – to nail this bet. Of course, if you do, there’s a good chance none of your family and friends will see you for a while as you take that much-needed vacation you’ve been dreaming of.
Case in point…the December 15 CashCall Futurity earned superfecta winners a whopping $10,268.80 on a mere $2 bet.
If you’d like to add more horses to your superfecta bet, then you can do that as well, just know that each time you add another horse, not only does your payout increase, but so will your chances of getting this pick wrong.
The Daily Double
This exotic bet has been around for quite some time, but it’s still quite fun-filled and profitable, even if it is as old as me dirt…or yours truly, whichever came first.
To cash in on a daily double wager you have to correctly pick the winners of two consecutive races. If you want to make a daily double wager that includes the 2014 Kentucky Derby you can include the race prior to – or immediately after the Run for the Roses. You can make this wager for any dollar amount, though most places require a $2 minimum. Even though you’re going to be betting on two races, don’t expect a huge payout unless two longshots overcome their odds to cash in.
This wager is the same as the Pick Two, except now you have to correctly pick the winners of three consecutive races. At Churchill Downs, the site of the Kentucky Derby, there’s a rolling pick three, meaning horse racing gamblers can make a new Pick Three wager each time one if offered.
In addition to the Pick Two, Three and Four, there’s a really profitable Pick Six exotic bet on the board that can literally pay hundreds of thousands of dollars if you’re lucky enough to nail it. Like the Pick Four that I didn’t mention, the Pick Six wager isn’t for just casual bettors. It can be very costly depending on how may races you make this wager on and clearly, extremely difficult to predict. Generally, experienced bettors will use a consortium of handicappers, online betting sites and experts that offer their own picks – in order to make what they believe is a very educated selection. Still, the Pick Six exotic bet is a toughie that is not for the faint of heart.
This year, for the third consecutive year, horse racing gamblers will be able to make Pick 6 wagers on both, the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Oaks Day Pick 6 will carry a $250,000 guaranteed pool while the Kentucky Derby Day Pick 6 will feature a $1 million guarantee.
“The Pick 6 sequences on Oaks and Derby Days are shaping up to offer tremendous wagering opportunities,” said Churchill Downs Racetrack President Kevin Flanery.
The Pick 6, which is a $2 minimum wager, will cover Races 6-11 on both days. Race 6 on Oaks Day is scheduled for 1:26 PM ET , while the sixth on Derby Day is 1:19 PM ET .
