2015 Kentucky Derby Exotic Betting Picks

Although exactas, trifectas and superfectas technically count as exotic wagers, when horse players talk about exotic betting, they’re usually discussing Pick 3’s, Pick 4’s and Pick 6’s. Making Pick 6 wagers has sort of gone out of vogue unless you tackle the Pick 6 with a syndicate. That leaves us with Pick 3’s and Pick 4’s. The Pick 3 looks like a good way to cash with minimal investment.

A Closer Look At My 2015 Kentucky Derby Exotic Betting Picks

Kentucky Derby Pick 3

This Pick 3 starts with Race 9 and ends with Race 11, the Kentucky Derby.

Race 9 Horses

2-Bayern – The BC Classic champ makes his 2015 debut. He’ll be the huge chalk in this. It’s too tough to go against him, though.

4-Private Zone – He might be faster than Bayern at a mile or less. New trainer Jorge Navarro is a master with sprinters. Navarro wins with 31% of his sprinters.

Race 10 Horses

1-Optimizer – The 12 to 1 morning line odds make this guy an overlay. Formerly trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Optimizer’s new trainer is Jose Fernandez. Optimizer finished second in the G2 Bernard Baruch in his first for Fernandez. He bounced in his second race, but could surprise here.

5-Finnegan’s Wake – He finished second in the G2 San Luis Rey, but that was after 3 scintillating G2 victories.

8-Stephanie’s Kitten – Even though she’s running against males, make no mistake. This 6-year-old mare has a closing kick that’s better than almost all of her competition in this.

Race 11 Horses

6-Mubtaahij – Nobody knows how good this horse is. He’s been sensational on dirt and the win in the UAE Derby was eye-catching, but he hasn’t really run against any one of note. Tough to leave out of the Pick 3, though, just in case he’s as good as he looked.

8-Dortmund – He gets a fantastic draw. Jockey Martin Garcia should have no trouble getting him out of the gate. Once that happens, if Martin can get him near the front, he could easily win on May 2.

10-Firing Line – He should have beaten Dortmund in the Bob and Beverly Lewis. No worries. He won the Sunland Derby by 14 ½ lengths.

18-American Pharoah – It’s not the worst possible draw, but we know that Bob Baffert would have liked his prize 2-year-old champion a bit nearer the rail. We’ll see what happens. If he’s the next coming of Secretariat, like many expect, he should have no issues blowing the field away from post-position 18.
