2016 Preakness Stakes Trifecta PicksJosh Bailey
The trifecta could pay much better in the Preakness than it paid in the Kentucky Derby. In the Derby, the Top 3 betting choices finished 1, 2, 3. In the Preakness, that could happen as well, but it’s 2 weeks later and unlike the Derby where Nyquist was a soft 2/1 favorite, he’s going to be a 3/5 or 1 to 2 favorite on May 21.
Because of that, I’m going to key 2 horses in the trifecta over a box of horses in the place and show slots. The key for me to hitting the trifecta will be to beat Nyquist for the win. I think that I’ve got just the right 2 horses in order to do that.
Analyzing My 2016 Preakness Stakes Trifecta Picks
What: 2016 Preakness Stakes
When: Saturday, May 21, 2016
Post Time: 6:19 PM ET
Where: Baltimore, MD
Stadium: Pimlico Race Course
Stream: NBC Sports Live
Key: 11-Stradivari 8/1, 2-Uncle Lino 20/1
11-Stradivari – The Todd Pletcher trained son of Medaglia D’oro has been training like a monster since his April 17 allowance win by 14 lengths at 1 1/8 miles. He looks to me like the horse to beat. I have to use him.
2-Uncle Lino – This Uncle Mo sired colt runs up front like Nyquist. He’s also tough like his half -brother as evidenced by him not giving up the lead in the California Chrome Stakes in his last.
Place and Show: 3-Nyquist, 2-Uncle Lino, 5-Exaggerator, 7-Collected, 8-Laoban, 11-Stradivari
3-Nyquist 3/5 – If I can beat the Derby champ, the trifecta should pay well. He’s the obvious choice to win the Preakness on Saturday, but it still makes sense to me to go after him. The odds will just be too short to make him the key horse in the trifecta.
5-Exaggerator 3/1 – His best chance of closing will be if it comes up muddy on Saturday. Exaggerator can stay closer to the pace but the Preakness will be his fifth race of the year. That’s a lot of racing for a three-year-old.
7-Collected 10/1 – Bob Baffert doesn’t enter horses in big races unless he believes that he can win the race. Baffert has a vested interest in keeping Nyquist from winning the Triple Crown.
8-Laoban 30/1 – On paper, it looks like this maiden doesn’t have much of a shot. I think that if he improves enough, he could jump into the trifecta.
