The field for the Preakness Stakes is set. Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist breaks from post 3 as a prohibitive 3/5 favorite. There may be a horse that can beat Nyquist, but I expect the Preakness Stakes odds on Nyquist will no doubt be less than 3/5 before the 11-runner field breaks from the gate on Saturday, May 21.
Because of that, I have no choice but to look elsewhere for the winner. I went against Nyquist in the Kentucky Derby and it cost me. It may cost me going against him in the Preakness Stakes but I just can’t swallow 3/5 on a horse facing other quality horses in a field of 10. See below for my win, place and show picks for this Saturday’s Preakness Stakes.
A Closer Look At My 2016 Preakness Stakes Win, Place, Show Picks
My 2016 Preakness Stakes Win Pick: 11-Stradivari 8/1
The Todd Pletcher trainee should improve big time off of his 14 length win at 1 1/8 miles in an allowance at Keeneland on April 17. In that race, Stradivari easily took over for jockey John Velasquez when asked. Breaking from post-position 11 in the Preakness may not be ideal, but Stradivari has enough talent for Velasquez to maneuver him either right to the outside of Uncle Lino and Nyquist, the expected pace-setters, or behind a quartet of Uncle Lino, Nyquist, Laoban and Abiding Star, if all 4 of those decide to run on the pace. From a tactical point of view, Stradivari could be right where he needs to be in order to win on Saturday.
My 2016 Preakness Stakes Place Pick: 2-Uncle Lino 20/1
Like Nyquist, this son of Uncle Mo loves to mix it up early. Uncle Lino, especially with speed jockey Fernando Perez on his back, figures to go right for the lead as soon as the gates open in the Preakness Stakes on May 21. Whether or not he relinquishes the lead is the big question. He didn’t in the California Chrome Stakes. The thing with three-year-old horses is that once they get good, they can stay good for a while. Uncle Lino may have gotten really good in his last when holding off Rare Candy and Touched By Autism in the California Chrome.
My 2016 Preakness Stakes Show Pick: 3-Nyquist 3/5
He was obviously the best horse in the Kentucky Derby. He can coast near the lead without giving up a lot of energy, almost like what American Pharoah had the ability to do, which makes him a legitimate contender for the Triple Crown this year. But I’m not sure how much better he is than either Uncle Lino or Stradivari. He’s proven his class over horses like Exaggerator and Lani. Uncle Lino and Stradivari have gotten better. If they improve any more, will they jump ahead of Nyquist? I think that they will.
