The Kentucky Derby Betting Favorite: Bolt d’Oro +700

Bolt d’Oro won the Maiden weight Special in August of last year, then took two Grade 1 Specials by winning the Del Mar Futurity in September and the FrontRunner Stakes to close out September. The bad news is that he suffered a pulled muscle while finishing third at the Sentinent Sup Juvenile in November behind Good Magic and Solomini. Oddsmakers still like the speedy thoroughbred to get right by the time the Kentucky Derby rolls around, but, you just never know, even though I’ll admit it’s easy to see why he’s the favorite. He’s never lost when healthy! Bolt d’Oro’s next workout could come within the next couple of weeks and his next intended race is the $400,000 San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita on March 10. His likely final prep for the Run for the Roses would take place at the $1-million Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 7.

The Smart Kentucky Derby Pick: Good Magic +1000

I’m feeling good about Good Magic as the smart pick to upset Bolt d’Oro, seeing as how he finished second at Saratoga in August last year, second at Belmont Park in the Champagne Stakes Grade 1 showdown and finished off the year by winning the Sentinent Jet Breeder’s Cup Juvenile in November. Three starts with two second place finishes and one win, tell me Good Magic, the son of Curlin’ is going to be a force at the Kentucky Derby!

The Longshot Kentucky Derby Pick: Montauk +2000

You want a longshot? Well, I’ve got one that is undefeated, although he’s only raced once. Montauk won the Maiden weight Special on October 7 at Belmont Park and that makes him a pretty good longshot pick if you ask me. I could have gone with another longshot like Instilled Regard who was second in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1) in his last start, but hey, what’s better than betting on a thoroughbred that’s never been beaten! Besides, I love Montauk, NY, it’s one of the best places in the U.S. for beaches, bays and marinas and most of all…Blue Fish!
